As much as M8 sucked major ass, it gave us a pretty neat development for Paul. He became a gym leader and showed us that he's pretty fucking good at training both Pokemon and other trainers.
Alain is just a Gary Stu with a magical superdragon. Deprive him of his only strong point, and he's no better than random shitters like Tierno.

Alain. He was so far above the league and that bit more above ash and didn't even give a fuck about the league as a concept, until ash convinced him to join, where Alain kicked his ass.
Whereas on the other hand, you got a sinnohtoddler also-ran, an anime version of Blue who was big and edgy until nut-cuttin' time where he got put in the reject box along with the rest the rejects by ash, who then went on to get bodied in an emergency "get him the fuck outta there" episode to get him out the region and into the next. The strongest trainer is the bloke who was able to beat an ash who was stronger than almost anyone elsse in the region and that wasn't in Gen 4.

Alain's base zard was able to oneshot Leon's boosted Rillaboom that would absolutely destroy Paul's garbage team since it ran through Diantha's team (including Gourgeist which beat Lance's Gyarados that stood up to Leon's zard) and gave Ash trouble (easily putting down a Sirfetched that almost beat Cynthia's Garchomp which is equal to Mega Lucario). Paul was struggling against base Lucario (who no-sold a Hyper Beam to the face), Dragonite (who's weak as shit) and Gengar. Alain's base zard alone would wreck all of Paul's shit team.

Paul lost to Ash in the quarters (and subsequently lost his antagonistic edge, if not his serious battle side by the time he'd showed up to help level Ash up for his finals jaunt). The problem with Alan is that Charizard is his only good Pokémon, but it's ridiculously strong. Paul have beasts like Torterra, Drapion, Electivire, Ursaring, etc. but all of them are weaker than Charizard IMO. It's basically a 1 vs 6.
