It's a slightly grammatically tricky line, even Google Translate fucks up and renders it as "Piercing the Evil of Love and Truth", even if you don't know nip you can see from that mistranslation how the 90s dub translator fumbled it in a similar manner.

The issue here is that tsuranuku literally means "to pierce/penetrate/go through" etc, and figuratively "to stick to/commit to" etc. The mistranslations are a result of not understanding that figurative meaning, with Google Translate and Bulbapedo just literally write "to pierce evil" and pretending that makes sense, while the dubbers and you attempting some best guess at what "to pierce evil" could potentially mean.

But tsuranuku doesn't ACTUALLY mean "fight against".

This whole thread is missing one big point; the Jessie and James motto is INTENTIONALLY wrong and ironic. And it's that way in both English and Japanese.

What kind of villains "protect the world from devastation" or "unite all people within our nation"? These generally sound like good things, the former moreso than the latter.

When the line says "denouncing the evils of truth and love", it's the double negative that confuses people. The line is saying it is not evil to be honest and to love others, again, very ironic for a pair of villains who are here to commit petty theft lol.

The motto that Kassidy and Butch give is a lot clearer about how they are actually evil.
