Gen 2 Viridian Forest always gives me the feeling of going back to some place you loved as a kid as an adult and everything that you loved about it is long gone. The business closed, the owners changed, the neighborhood kids all moved out, your childhood home was remodeled / torn down and rebuilt by a new family, etc. That kind of feeling, you know? Gen 2 Kanto just captures that feeling really well.

Obviously a lot of Gen 2 Kanto's ensmallening was technical limitations or lack of resources on Game Freak's part, but the way things changed in the three years between the games is something that none of the newer gens even tried to touch on. Viridian forest was clearcut, Lavender tower is a radio station, the power plant is running and all the Pokemon that were there are displaced. The pool in Celadon is full of nothing but Grimer and pollution. Cinnabar island was destroyed entirely. That construction in Vermilion STILL isn't started. Being able to revisit Kanto as it's influenced by further development and contrast it with the more natural-feeling Johto was unique.

I wasn't just comparing it to gen 2. I meant no version of Viridian Forest has the cutdown trees be it in GSC, FRLG, HGSS, LGPE or any spinoff material. The main anime had at least one tree stump when Pikachu and Caterpie are talking to each other, but it doesn't give off the same vibe of deforestation like RGBY does.
