Mario World is still the best Mario game, LTTP is the best Zelda game, FF6 is the best Zelda game. Most franchises were better in 2D, other examples include Metroid, Sonic, and Mega Man. There are exceptions like Metal Gear but they're the minority

Ocarina is cluncky to play nowadays whether Link to the Past may look less impressive but it's much smoother gameplay-wise

By FF6 Square mastered spritework with very good backgrounds and battle sprites
FF7 had soulful pre-rendered backgrounds but the crappy low poly models don't fit at all

Super, ZM, Fusion, and Dread are all great, but you're a tourist if you think Prime (1 or 2) isn't the best. I'll admit Metroid is a little trickier since they're all so close in quality (except for 3 games).
