It's the other way around, they didn't have faith in Liko, so they created Roy as a second protagonist in case young boys didn't like having an icky girl as the mc.

Though boys ended up liking Friede more than Roy, so he was ultimately very unnecessary to the show.

Because they wanted to waste more time on shoving Goh and Koharu. That's the problem with current Pokemon anime , current writing staff are too obsessed with shoving their OC. They had interesting characters like Marnie and Bede to carry JN and they wasted it to shove OC that only they cares about.

Unlike YGO & Digimon where writing staff has to come up with an entire setting & cast, Pokemon has the freaking game providing them with interesting idea & characters that they can use. The previous staff understood this advantage which is why they able to run this series for seven generation but current production filled with newbies who wants to make entire anime on their OC and worst part is that their idea for characterization sucks.

the anime has ALWAYS been a fanfiction festival from day fucking 1
it's easier to count the characters who're actually faithful to their game characters than those who are not

The issue is with the nu-anime treating its OCs like main characters of bigger importance than game characters. The Ash anime had OCs, but they were only around for like an episode or two, and they were gone.
