Why did he end up become basically the defacto head developer of Pokemon when he was just a composer?

Cause he was clearly a better director than he was a composer if you compare both game and music quality in the rest of the series to the first game.

He was more competent and driven than the rest of the team, including the founder. He was trustable to deliver decent products on-schedule.

You'd be amazed when you enter the working world and realize just how hard that is to come by.

He was doing a weird grab-bag of stuff beyond just composing pretty much from the beginning, and since he's one of Game Freak's founders he naturally ended up as the person working on the games with the most seniority after a few years

Early GF wasn't that strict and that probably carried on. It started as a game magazine a bunch of otaku made up so there was no strict hierarchy.
IIRC they also said that basically everyone did everything when making Gen 1. He probably never was *just* a composer when working on pokemon.

The other anon is right, Masuda was basically the reason RS existed at all.

You are missing important game freak lore. At some point in development during gen 1, they lost a shit ton of data, and some programmers just up and left due to that and the game being in dev hell. Masuda while being just the music guy prior, learnt to program to help salvage the wreckage. Tajiri was very thankful to him and must've thought he was a good fit as he'd already taken over by Crystal.

He already knew how to program but had to get familiar with the code Pokemon was using. Also when GF's mainframe computer broke down and they risked losing all their development progress he spent as much time as he could to fix it.

Thats the problem. RS started everything wrong with the franchise today.

Basically these. Back then the games industry wasn't like it is today where every company hires for specific roles looking for specific experience like environment artist vs character artist or physics programmer vs gameplay programmer vs graphics programmer vs tools programmer. Everyone tended to wear many hats outside of their main role and if your little group of 5-20 people didn't have a guy for something then whoever had the time would start learning and throwing stuff at the wall until it was at least passable. Even larger studios were like that - pitch in wherever you can to help your team meet their deadlines. It's only after a project or two that people would figure out where they did their best work and stick to it more and more as teams expanded, then over time the people who had the most experience with the most skills would end up in management/director positions because they'd have the best idea how all the parts come together. Nobody said "I'm gonna get a job as X at Y studio" or "I want to fund a game studio, I'm gonna start putting up a ton of job listings" until the late 80's in pc space and the big consoles we know today didn't have 1st party studios with massive franchise contracts until the mid 90's. Pretty much everything started out as individuals or small groups of people learning how to computer then deciding to make something and sell it, often through a publisher or catalogue, then getting organized to become the big household names after they had some success.

>Amazing pokemon designs
>Tons of new features
The only downside was the more intrusive storyline with no real payoff, which was fixed in BW.

>Cant trade with RBY and a ton of existing mons were not immediately available on RS release, have to wait for remakes of games released only a few years before to get them - early signs of dexcutting and disconnected from past games so cant bring own mons across
>Most of the region is either grass and trees or water, nothing in between - didnt really start a trend, this is something were Hoenn is uniquely bad
>Jobmons galore, with a kickboxing chicken, bellydancing/yoga instructor, sumo-wrestler, ballet dancer/knight, mariachi dancer, etc - started trend where a ton of humanoid mons now need a "job"
>No day/night cycle - started the trend of cutting essential world-building features
>Rivals are friendly and there's absolutely no sense of competition/animosity there - started trend of boring, uneventful friendly "rivals" who are more annoying than motivating and end up absolutely nowhere
>Story revolving around god-like legendaries with two new retarded teams - started the trend of everything being shoved in your face with no mystery/ambiguity and the retarded power creep / "upping the stakes" where its now at the point where every legendary needs to represent/control something and they've now ran out of ideas and made convoluted mons to try to be original
There's more but just the things off the top of my head

You're actually saying this coming off of fucking Johto? Hoenn has long twirling routes, deserts, a town made from tree forts, underwater areas and caves, beaches, an active volcano, an abandoned ship, etc.
GSC and HGSS are literally nothing but small, grassy routes, small brown caves, and one small area hecking comfy Japanese tower town. Doesn't even have its own Victory Road, lmfao. It's by far the most bland region they did.

>Hoenn has long twirling routes
With trees and grass or all water
>deserts
Wow 1 new biome
>a town made from tree forts
Trees and grass
>underwater areas
Water
>caves
Same boring caves everywhere
>beaches
Water
>an active volcano
Only the summit, trees and grass everywhere else
>an abandoned ship
Not a biome
>Actually compares Hoenn to Johto from a previous gen where everything should be worse since Gen 3 is supposed to be an improvement, showing how little things changed and even went backwards since Johto had entire cities / towns / area on beaches surrounded by cliffs / lakes with sunken trees where the water level changes / an actual volcanic island / icy caves.

You need to get your Johtodar in working order. He's completely transparent.
