I was doing a run with Blastoise in Kanto recently and the rival's Gyarados legitimately wiped out almost my entire fucking team in the Lavender Town battle. The only reason I managed to win was because I had an overleveled Seadra (maybe like 10 levels higher) that I had traded from another game. His Gyarados had like Hydro Pump and Dragon Rage and shit which feels crazy for that point in the game.

His team if you pick Charizard feels much easier at that point in the game.
