What was the reaction back in the day when Misty was abruptly written off the show and a new girl quickly replaced her in the new series? Seems it would be kinda jarring, especially as it was initially portrayed as a totally new start for Ash, both Misty AND Brock leaving, so it didn't seem like an 'attack' on one individual character. But then Brock showed back up 3 eps into Advanced. Kind of a bait and switch. So really it was just Misty who was killed off. How did fans react to this? Did they just take it in their stride, or was there a backlash. I don't see how it wouldn't have been taken as an 'attack' on a beloved character they grew up with, seamlessly replacing her with a new girl.

I've read that the reason they did this is because they thought a character refresh would be more profitable, but of course Ash and Pikachu were too fundamental to the series to change, so they changed the girl sidekick instead. In retrospect, were the execs correct in this, or did it make no change, maybe even adversely affect commerical success?

I always thought that kids often turn away from things if characters change, kids are autistic and want things to stay the same. I personally turned away from Power Rangers because I genuinely resented Jason Zack and Trini being replaced with 3 dweebs and Tommy getting ridiculously buffed (new White powers + taking the leadership role) - and that was well before I learned about the actual irl shenanigans that led to that change.
I also quit wrestling because after Rock and Austin basically left, I wanted Jericho and Angle to become the new top guys, but they were used as enhancement talent, and eventually they went with Batista and especially CENAWINSLOL, two guys I hated. Apart from two specific matches (shawn-vs-taker at wms 25 and 26), I didn't watch any other wwe for over 10 years after wm21 (when Cena and Batista were crowned as the new champs). I remember being thoroughly disgusted after that ppv lol.

(As a child I stopped watching halfway through the Orange Islands. Really can't remember why, I didn't dislike it. I remember really liking the Orange gym challenges. I think the last ep I saw was the second gym where Nidoqueen beat Lapras in the first challenge. I think TV here might have moved the episodes from weekday afternoons after school to weekend mornings and I just couldn't get up early enough, I've always been terrible at mornings.

Anyway this past Oct/Nov I decided to pick up where I left off, finished the Oragne Islands, then watched all of Johto. Now I'm on Advanced. Ash just caught a Treecko.

So yeah, I'm wondering for people who continued watching at the time, what the reaction was like. May seems ok so far. But she isn't Misty. I think if I were still a child watching this I'd be upset that some new girl has come in and Ash and Brock have practically already forgotten Misty. And Max is annoying desu, but at least he has more depth to him than Togepi I guess.)

Go without saying that they did Misty dirty. Gave her nothing to do for all of Johto and then decide to ditch her instead of actually trying. Honen was the region of too much water, 7/10. The 1st region with a water/bug type pokemon, which Misty could've been tsundere towards at first before eventually learning to love the bug. A region with a villain group obsessed with advancing water pokemon at the expense of all others that could've tested Misty's principles. And the writers seriously had nothing for her?

The toothless cyclical nature of the show was already apparent before she left, which had drained most of my enthusiasm for the show anyway, aside from the movies. Ironically, the soft reboot going into Advanced just removed all doubt. Misty has roots in the Johto-Kanto area, Ash wants to move on to Hoenn, they go splitsville. The precedent was there with Tracey (and Brock's return was an olive branch that Misty wasn't gone forever, as well). No one I know reacted poorly to May, and I know some autists who really hate change. Ash is a ramblin' man, he's not going to hang around Cerulean forever.
