I liked th Go catching. Battling and catching being drastically different kinds of gameplay made it so neither got old for me. Usually during Pokemon games there comes a point where I avoid wild battles because in sick of them, but going back and fourth between Go catching and trainer battles helped so I never got tired of either.

On the one hand, I like the Sevii Islands a lot, and it would have made the game's map bigger.

On the other hand tho, I really like how self-contained LGPE is, by taking place only in Kanto. It's small and comfy, in a way.

Here comes the big question: FRLG or LGPE?

FRLG has the Sevii Islands, Johto Pokemon, Trainer Tower, the VS Seeker, etc

LGPE has Mega Evolutions, Overworld Pokemon, Following/Ride Pokemon, Trainer Customization, playing with your Partner, etc

In the end, I think LGPE wins just barely.

I think I'd have to say FRLG just because there is so much more to do. More areas to explore, more pokemon to catch, battle facilities, and being able to rebattle trainers are all really good additions that give you more to do. LGPE's additions are almost all cosmetic, which are cool and really add to the game, but once you beat the Elite 4 there isn't much left to do.

I will say though that since 2018 I've played LGPE more than I have FRLG, and I used to replay FR about every year. I love LGPE, but there is no denying it's light on actual things to do. A battle facility or a new postgame area to explore would have really added to the game.

In conclusion, I would say that while FRLG's activities are a bit more "lengthy" LGPE still has more content overall, as shown above.

Also, while I agree that FRLG has the advantage of having a Battle Facility (Trainer Tower, which has 4 different modes), LGPE's Master Trainers rematches, as well as the battles vs Red, serve a similar purpose overall.

So yeah, I'd say LGPE is the winner overall, and that's without taking into account all the other improvements that LGPE has over FRLG too.

Also, I forgot to add that LGPE also has an additional feature, the Play Yard Pokemon herding minigame. But I didn't count it because it's only accessible if you transfer a certain number of Pokemon from Pokemon Go. So it's not exactly an in-game feature, which is why I didn't count it.

Likewise, in FRLG I didn't count the Joyful Game Corner on the Sevii Islands, because it is a multiplayer activity, not something you can do on your own. Same with Berry Crush.

As much as I understand some of the gameplay complaints, I think LGPE nailed it when it comes to world and character design. Kanto felt vibrant and lively in these games.

I'm mad that LGPE design documents were not part of the Teraleak. The concept sheets would have been epic.

I still have some silent hope for a Johto sequel, but I guess not...

I think the charm of LGPE is not in its challenge, but in its charm. Everything about LGPE is beautiful and also cool. And if you want SOME challenge, the post game has some great battles (Master Trainers, Red, etc)

LGPE is unironically one of my 3 favorite Pokemon games of all time. LGPE, Platinum and HGSS (in no particular order).
