I think Pokémon Emerald is one of the best Pokémon games. But it has a few flaws to be considered perfect:

>Bug-type and Grass-type Pokémon lack proper moves, making many of them have poor movepools (this is related to the lack of a physical/special split).

Emerald used to be my all-time favorite Pokemon game for more than a decade, but for some reason that I can't explain, I don't really like Emerald anymore. I even tried to replay it recently, but I lost interest before reaching the Elite 4.

Nowadays, I don't even consider Emerald to be the best Gen 3 game (that's FRLG imo). Nowadays my favorite games are: FRLG, Platinum, HGSS, BW2 and LGPE. To a lesser extent, I also like SwSh+DLC, USUM and PLA.

Emerald has so much content (Battle Frontier, Trainer Hill, Contests, Secret Bases, Game Corner minigames, Pokemon League rematches, Gym Leader rematches, etc) but for some reason it doesn't excite me anymore. I think it's because I don't really like Hoenn anymore as a region. It really has too much water, among other problems. The Hoenn Pokemon are not that good either, compared to Kanto and Johto except for my boys Salamence, Metagross, Sceptile and Aggron.

If I had to name the games that excite me the most nowadays, I would say: FRLG, HGSS and Platinum.

RSE does have the best side content tho: Contests and Secret Bases. My perfect Pokemon game would probably be FRLG or HGSS, with Hoenn's Contests and Secret Bases added.

You are partially right. I got bored of the water sections of Hoenn, the Pokedex, and even some of the characters in the game.

However, I have never been bored of Johto and Kanto, and I think/hope that I never will.

The midgame of Emerald is fucking awful, like everything after the normal gym until you are allowed into the final gym. A bunch of miserable empty water routes where you dive to find pointless vitamins and fire stones you'll never use, horrible slogs against a million villain team shit-trainers with one zubat or poochyena, and a terrible boring ending to the main quest.

I don't care for Emerald specifically but Hoenn is easily the best laid out region with the best art direction out of all of them.
The Pokemon selection is also great with just enough returning mons and a great selection of new ones to really make for a fulfilling roster.
My only issue with it is not having a fourth rival fight at the endgame, though I guess that plays into the Wally reveal.
Still though, no reason it couldn't have been a post-game thing like Red.

Gen 1 is the only good gen because it has zero expectations to live up to except from those who were born after its release who expect some kind of revolutionary masterpiece to justify the existence of Pokemania without realizing Pokemania was founded on the supplementary material more than the actual games themselves.
RGB were just simple JRPGs with a unique approach to party composition (team-building out of monsters, but also in a 1v1 style) and the impressively innovative idea to allow for multiplayer interaction via trading and battling, thereby giving players the perfect means to keep playing the game even after the credits roll, they catch Mewtwo, and optionally complete all the Round 2 challenges from Pokemon Stadium. That's all they needed to be, and it worked spectacularly.
None of these grand delusions of unfathomably large rosters, cutting-edge graphics, masterful gameplay that would make even Chess players weep, just a simple rock-paper-scissors element system and the status conditions that enrich a fun yet engaging idea.
