I just realized that in FRLG, when you are seen by an NPC trainer and he approaches you and starts talking to you, you don't turn to face him, and the battle just starts, while you're still looking away from him.

It was the same in the Gen 1 games (RGBY) but it was fixed from Gen 2 onwards so that you turn towards the enemy trainer while he's talking to you. But FRLG is a remake SO FAITHFUL to the originals, that they even reverted this little change back to how it was in the Gen 1 games.

Is this based or cringe? Or was it just an oversight?

Well the graphics may have not been groundbreaking relative to the time they came out in, however one thing you can say about Gens 1-7 is that they kept getting better graphically relative to each other.
So when a Gen 8 remake of Gen 4 comes out and it looks worse than the Gen 4 game it's remaking you can see how that's an issue.

If you compare the hardware the games are on, GSC is at least contemporary with stuff like the Zelda games or the GBC Dragon Quest remakes, sometimes even exceeding them in quality like with how beautiful the battle sprites were

Meanwhile RSE looks as bad as Final Fantasy IV did when it first came out. Basically an 8-bit game with more colors. Sprites got fugly again, especially the Kantomons that weren't in the game. Lots of backsprites were just GSC sprites with updated colors. The overworld tiles looked embarrassingly basic for the tech they were on. It's obvious they knew it was shit because despite FRLG's autistic map design, its art direction is an improvement over how RSE looked and laid the groundwork for Sinnoh's art style

That's a really bad comparison because RSE's overworld artstyle looks like complete ass. If it were a FRLG screenshot, perhaps of the exact same location in Kanto in GSC, that would be more fair and probably make FRLG look better. As it stands, unironically GSC looks better because RSE just looks that bad. This is way less of a problem if it were a battle screenshot as well, as RSE looks basically fine there.

The GBC has no backlight, picking the brighter color was always the correct choice. You can tell they thought about this a lot because even the night palate picks fairly bright colors. The darker colors are always used for detail rather than the main color. Note the brown on the cave for another example.

Shame they fucked up a little bit in the 3DS titles where they made really high quality models that lagged the 3DS to shit and nobody would care because they could barely see the difference anyway.
