It seems the Battle Tower ban list is based on this code, and not a set list of banned pokemon.

This makes it easier. This means any OP fakemon I add into the game are going to be banned by default. I'm going to change it so that pokemon with 601 attack or more are banned, and then ban the 600 BST pokemon that shouldn't be in the tower like Mew. Also, I'm going to free Wobbuffet.

Crystal Clear is probably the best comparison to PureRGB in terms of the huge QoL featureset while being relatively faithful to the games in terms of stats, learnsets, etc. (PureRGB is way more aggressive, it buffs a ton of pokemon)
Polished is great but makes a ton of changes to mechanics, it's more like a nu-gen game in the gsc engine, however in terms of buffing mons it's closer to PureRGB than CC is
Some other more faithful hacks:

8's story is a complete mess but it's got a lot of solid side content even if most of it is retreading side content from 7. It's also a Kiryu game, Ichiban is borderline irrelevant to the story and the story even tends to forget he even exists at times. Combat is infinitely better balanced and done than 7 by a considerable amount and it's insane 7 came out in the condition it did because 8 makes it seem like amateur devs were in charge of it all.

8G's story is a generic pirate story but the characters are solid and it has some great substories. Combat is the easiest it's ever been and you have to either make sure you download the "Rings don't give attack" mod if you're on PC, or never upgrade your attack at all if you're not.

the emerald decomp came out in 2019 or 2020 iirc, so the spike in 2023-2024 is likely a delayed outcome of that, also a result of the release of pokeemerald-expansion and a spike in popularity of difficulty hacks. probably a lot of those projects also started during covid like you mentioned. 2025 is probably just slower because of that wave dying down. also, what date was this data actually compiled? because it could have been much earlier this year and so not entirely reflective. I probably would have left 2025 off the graph until it was over but that's me.

I'm not sure what caused that spike in 2015, although you'd want to look a few years prior to that because these games take a long time to develop, especially original hacks which make up the bulk of releases in 2015 & 2016. you'd probably be looking at something that happened around 2011-2013. I can't think of any major developments around then, essentials came out earlier and the decomps much later. I would guess that going into the 2010s is when documentation and tutorials reached a point of being more accessible, as well as a wave of kids who had grown up with the games now reaching an age where they could do stuff like this. prior to 2010, it was really a frontier with people still figuring stuff out and pioneering things.

Yeah I actually think a more accurate reason for the decline in original region & story hacks is the rise of essentials. I'm assuming that chart is specifically tracking romhacks and not fangames. A lot of people nowadays if they want to make a region from scratch will go to essentials because it's easier to build something new there. I'm playing seaglass right now, I like it a lot. It's basically just Emerald but with kanto and johto pokemon sprinkled in to the ecosystem in a mostly immersive way. Also quality of life modern amenities. phys/special split and more fun movesets to make using some old favorites less of a chore.

Came at a good time in my life. I havent played gen 3 in ten years but its a nice hot summer and it feels right. Boxed my starter, using a poochyena with cool egg/dexnav moves. Playing on Hard mode but its too easy. Gotta turn off the exp share.
