Started about last year or so from the beginning, now at 2nd "journeys" saga(cant remember name)
They started dropping the ball with the Unova episodes but there was still some soul left up to Kalos

Writer frens, I'm curious. How would you write a pokemon anime? I guess you could do the ye olde protagonist tries to get all the gym badges route, but you would need an entertaining group for that. My memories hazy because I haven't seen the early seasons in over a decade, but if I'm correct, what made Ash great was that he was a punk kid. He technically cheated to beat Brock and would banter with Misty often. Later Ash was a downgrade by comparison because he became more of a generic shonen protag.
Anyway, I would try to write dumb, fun stuff like a series about a pokemon detective or haha what if Liko got dynamaxed, haha.

If Pokémon 2023 was another SM series where Ash attend class with Arven, Penny and Team Star leaders than it would have been several times better than Horizon. Considering Naranja Uva Academy is an actual school with teachers and each Team Star leaders has far more interesting personality and backstory to explore unlike the RVT. Geeta could even use Ash to inspect the gym leaders ( as the player does) which result in Ash helping each gym leaders with their issue. The series could had a running gag where Ash and Nemona's battle kept getting interrupted until their final showdown.

The formula would've kept fresh if they kept cycling in new character groups for each region starting from Hoenn, and it'd justify telling similar stories and character arcs (compared to having to constantly reset Ash in some shape or form) while also allowing them to give those characters meaningful development and payoffs since they aren't expected to last indefinitely, whereas Ash wasn't allowed to be even remotely like his old self until the literal finale of his journey (and even then it had been so long that he was a ghost of that old self.)

Truth is that Pokémon was never serious anime like Yugioh and Gundam that change protagonist. Pokémon is more closer to Frieren, Dragonball ,Doraemon and Detective Conan that is carried by the popularity of the protagonist. Which mean Ash's story will only end when there are no pokemon left for him to befriend which also mean his story will continue as long as Game-freak keep making new Pokemon.

At this point it would be a lot more better if the entire Horizon turns out to be Liko's fever induced dream and all the OC are fragments of her imagination,
