Zoomers like you wouldn't get it, explicitly clear from referring to it as just "the Kanto protagonist". It's a matter of your final fight being against all that you accomplished in the previous games, where you were the one who created the legend that the character would be known for. But of course you wouldn't look at it that way because you weren't there to play them in order as they came out, so you can only think of them as a 3rd person role as if it means anything on its own.

Pokemon peaked early because they were able to leverage a surprise mega hit into something with staying power. Once they find their formula, they are little more complacent, never really able to take full advantage of advances in hardware and maybe worried to mess with the formula too much. And the fanbase pretty much eats up anything

Pokemon on the GB/GBC/GBA filled a niche that no other technology could. There were other RPGs but not as simple if I remember right. Slap on the anime playing for a couple hours every day and consider that kdis were not connected to the internet in the way they are today and it's going to hit a homerun easy. It was also portable multiplayer if you had a link cable.

Because it was supposed to be ending of Pokemon. It was well known that all fads in gaming, toys etc are relevant at best for 3 years, so Pokemon was way past it's expected life cycle, and even the biggest market specs were expecting it to be gone soon. No one could imagine that Pokemon will keep amount of dedicated fans that made it sustainable long-term. This kind of franchise usually stay alive for 3 years at best and it was a common sense till Pokemon happened. It was Pokemon that inspired early 00s toyetic shows and made USA to import Japanese hobby anime in excessive quantities, and funnily enough nothing stayed as big or relevant worldwide as Pokemon.
