Dios mio, still like the game, but these first two gyms felt like an utter slog. I've been running around virbank complex farming audino encounters but it feels so slow

Seems fine to me. The Virbank Complex encounters are really good too. If you're using 4 Pokemon then there will be some grind in every game.

I was doing livingdex stuff in gen 3 the last few weeks, so I'm partly cranky because I'm not used to the exp scaling thing gen 5 does.

it's a bit grindy but you can also unlock passpower exp +++ in the entralink just doing the funfest mission. while BW1 requires entralinked/two ds with both copies, BW2 doesn't require anything else

You don't need to match the gym leaders' levels you retard. Are you doing a nuzlocke? Are you 7 and still don't understand type match ups? Are you for some reason using a number of pokemon less than they are? If the answer to both of those questions was "no", then just fight the leader whenever. What's the worst that'll happen, you lose a battle and don't steamroll every fight in the game?

Also, training is the easiest shit in the world in BW2. Audino farm, sport.

Unova has these things called Audinos. You kill them anywhere's grass and they drop loads of exp.

Dude Gen 5 literally gives you catch up EXP no matter what you fight so you're always at the level they want you to be, just play the game.
Also in what game have the wild Pokemon ever matched the gym leader's levels? The gym leaders are always deliberately higher level than everything around them because they're supposed to be a significant increase in challenge.

I recently beat the game, and I don't really understand what the issue is with the EXP system. I just fought every trainer, skipped a lot of the wild encounters from Gym 3 onward, and I didn't need to grind at any point in the game. I reached the Elite Four with Level 54-55 Pokémon (like 3 or 4 levels below most of the Pokémon they have) and I beat it. It took a few attempts, but I didn't need to grind at any point in the game.
Using the Lucky Egg and the Exp Share makes it really easy to not fall behind too much level-wise. And you can beat most gyms while being like 5 levels below the "cap". You don't need to match the levels of the Gym Leaders to beat them, you know? I've always felt like you're expected to be slightly underleveled for gyms and the League, bc the point is that they're much stronger trainers.

I didn't even need to use items in the fights themselves, except maybe for Iris where I did pop a couple of Max Revives. But that was the only fight I needed to do that in. Just go into stuff underleveled, don't grind. Makes every Pokémon game more fun imo.

As I said, I was on the second gym, and there were perhaps a dozen trainer fights up to that point, so even doing every fight isn't a lot.
In Gen 5, the exp gain formula has a decay factor of (2L + 10) / (L + L_p + 10), taken to the power of 2.5, where L_p is your level and L is the wild level. What this means is that if you're at say level 30, and the wilds are level 20, you're going to be getting ~36% less exp per battle, which means that you'll be having to fight 58% more battles overall. You level up to 31, and the penalty is now almost 40%, requiring 64% more battles on average.

It's not completely unworkable, but it's enough to notice if that makes sense, especially before you do have the lucky egg.

Anon idk if you're aware but the reason they do this is so you don't overlevel and trivialize the game.
If you're noticing significant decay in exp earned then that probably means you should stop grinding and move on with the story.

It happens yes, but that's way too frequent compared to what's in the game.

Weird. With a team of 4 mons (and two Revive fodder), I was only level 45-48 by the time I got to the Elite 4 and 49-51 by the time I beat Ghetsis.

As for the sequels, I was about 2-3 levels below consistently. But managed to catch up towards the end.

Fair, as I mentioned earlier, I've been playing emerald and firered for a couple months to do a living dex in each, so I'm completely unused to the level scaling for the XP
