They tried way too hard. The design's really edgy in a way that makes them look out of touch and it's a legendary that looks like it should be a second evolution of some quadruped electric cat line. If they simplified the design, dropped it from legendary to catchable in the wild, added a previous evolution, and put in some lore that made it fight Lucarios on sight, it probably would have worked.

I like this Lu-cat-rio, but he was shafted. He was cool, but we know GF have that shitty "can't be more or as cool as Pikachu, Lucario and/or Charizard" rule.
That's why other cool mons like the Navi rejects or Rillaboom suck. They either have to be stuck by a dumb "gimmick", or suck in the stat/move spread.
