It did seem extreme for a pokemon game, though I'm sure to young kids who hadn't learned any physics beyond gravity pulls things down yet it probably didn't register as anything more than "oh no, the water's all gone, the poor magikarp are stuck!" Team Galactic basically went blast fishing with a warhead, anything in that lake should be dead since water can't compress like air and the blast had enough force to displace or evaporate almost all the water. Those magikarp must be the strongest pokemon on earth if their bodies weren't crushed by the pressure.

Why don't they just evolve them all into an army of Gyaradoses?

I now want to see a Gentleman/Rich Boy/Socialite with a Gyarados, Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Alakazam, etc. with the backstory being they bought from the shady magikarp seller and the game corner and then just pumped rare caNdies into them. Bonus points if none of them have EVs.
