>Perfect monster design, borrowing traits from numerous lizards but being cartoony enough to not be generic
>Also has that authentic weird Japanese monster feel by being based of Akaname, a yokai
>It takes being a small and pink creature with smooth round edges, traits that you would typically associate with the highly marketable starters and the rest of the pink mons of gen 1 and flips them on their head by being weird and ugly and gross
>Despite being off-putting, artists can still make him look cute if so desired by adding facial expressions unlike the early seasons of the anime where it rarely emoted much like an actual reptile
Lickitung encapsulates the fun, weird, Japanese appeal of Pokรฉmon so brilliantly.

It's also one of those well designed evo families where each stage is distinct, yet has an obvious continuity. The perfect balance between the middle stage just being the final, but smaller, and the "where the fuck did that come from" where the stages are barely related.

Somehow strikes the perfect balance between badass and strangely kinda cute. Perfectly captures the vibe of something you'd see graffiti-ed on the side of a wall, or a shitty doodle you'd make in your notebook in 5 minutes or less.

...or maybe I'm just biased, who knows.

Tyranitar. Anything that could be considered a perfect design should be a stage 2. Evolution is the core of pokemon so a build up leading to a grand conclusion is vital. With T-tar you have the cut lil Larvitar as an ideal first stage. You then have pupitar as the literal mid-stage chrysalis that with enough hard work eventually becomes the beautiful butterfly that is Tyranitar. He's difficult to find meaning you have to search far and wide and reach the heights of a trainer to get him. He's a kaiju which represents early pokemon's design philosophy. He's a pseudo, a long standing part of pokemon's identity. He sees competative success thanks to his ability, unique typing, and vastly customizable movepool creating a microcosm of the competative environment in a single pokemon. He's from the era when pokemon still had soul and represents the swan song of pokemania.

Absolute peak even if he isn't my personal favorite.

to be fair most Boomburst uses have no STAB and/or shit special attack, so Exploud is one of the best uses, though its jarring it gets beaten out by Chatot by 1 point. Exploud should have 100 special attack at the bare minimum.

Generally my preferences are somewhere between Pokemon and Digimon (some recentish leggys often capture the feel I like).
Metagross is one of the best implementations of that middle style. When I first played Ruby, even though I wasn't actually on the internet yet, I still understood that a non-draconic pseudo-leggy was kind of a big deal (strangely it felt that way already only in Gen 3). Add to that its steel typing and whenever I battled Steven's Metagross I could FEEL the ground shaking beneath me over this absolute Protoss Dragoon slowly marching towards me and my mon.

Yeah, I get that its got the whole sound based thing going on. But it still feels messy and not well connected. The going from quiet to loud is cool, and the middle evolution actually works better for Whismur if it was the final stage. But Exploud just sort of feels tacked on as a final 'even bigger and louder but also angry' form. Like it has middle evolution awkwardness in it's 3rd stage. The visual line doesn't feel good, it goes from shy and scared to outgoing and happy... and then to pissed.

Never really thought of it because I'm not the biggest fan of the middle evolution, but it does work as a better end form for Whismur than Exploud.
