Last time I had a thread like this the idea of making a browser based game where you create your own gym challenges other players have to fight came up
I wanted to try developing that while discussing old games to take ideas from
The general idea is setting up your own gym which players will have to face, an in game trading feature to create and economy, and possibly some sort of autogrind mode in there too similar to a clicker game
When you aren’t building your own gym challenge your challenging other players’ to gain currency to strengthen your gym (better pokemon, more trainers, more gym space, battle restrictions, etc) or pokemon on your team you use to challenge other gyms

Now that I think about it this sounds sort of like the main PVP mode in FEH

Awesome in theory, but the inclusion of grinding makes me hesitate to get excited. It sounds like it would end up becoming a dick measuring contest on who could grind to make the most epic gym, like a lot of mobile games are.

Yeah I guess there’s the risk of that
The issue is I’m trying to combine multiple ideas
I really like the idea of some thing you could just grind a lot but maybe there’s a sort of limit

Don't get me wrong, grinding can be fun. I just have had bad experiences with that kind of thing in the past. Honestly working towards a better gym would be cool, and if there isn't a monetization motivation it would probably help a lot to keep it from feeling bullshit.

As long as it's the kind of grind where you can make some form of progress every couple of fights instead of huge bouts of repetition for small gain then it would be cool.

Oh man, what about badge customization? Totally. Need custom badges. Maybe also multiple levels of teams to curate your fight based on challenger's levels.

Came back to say I'm pissed I can't play this right now. It sounds like such a rad idea that I got excited before remembering it's probably a long ways away from being real.

everyone is gonna want to make their own gym but nobody will want to challenge other people's gyms

That’s true, well maybe, I guess it would need to be incentivized in some way
Maybe a win streak bonus or something

Either way this is just a pipe dream not something I could ever make 100% alone so

What? Why wouldn't they? Seeing people's custom gyms would be awesome.

The problem I see is that all the highest level gyms would end up becoming meta pick samey stuff instead of cool themes.

This actually gave me an idea for a romhack that was just the World Championship Tournament from B2W2, but with trainers from all kinds of unseen regions. So it would have Kanto-Paldea, plus spinoff and fan regions. Would get all the fun of crazy battles without having to program all the regions.

You'd probably need to give players an easy way to customize/create overworld assets. Otherwise everyone's gyms are going to look very similar.

I’m imagining you can just select which gym you want to use based on any of the games
Or maybe just 3 and 4 since those are simpler than the gen 5 style 3d puzzles
And then somehow manipulate the assets to form your own paths and stuff
You’d have to clear it yourself to make sure you didn’t make some impossible Winona gym puzzle like with Mario maker

For the in game economy I’ve only imagined being able to trade pokemon or items or TMs
But trading pokemon seems odd since you’re going to be a type specialist
At least that’s what I planned

Idk how to show progress on this or what to start with
I think I’d begin with some mock UI stuff to showcase the idea in action

Or just wanna discuss old browser games in general

What I would do it so you have to earn points by fighting gyms, and then you can spend those points to 'catch' a wild pokemon via a gacha. You can select the level and area/biome that you're searching for. This way if you catch a pokemon you don't want you can trade it with other people.

Oh yeah I think a gacha makes sense
Could also do timed expansions to new regions or gachas that focus on specific types, hidden abilities, etc

Would this hypothetical game use EVs/IVs?
If so try cutting EVs by 4 so instead of 252 by stat with a max cap of 510 EVs it would be 63 extra stat points per stat with a max cap of 126 EVs per mon.
That way EV training can be faster BUT Power Items are still somewhat relevant

I don't think there would be EVs in terms of grinding, but youd probably be able to enhance them with a slider like on showdown

Why? Why make it based on a centralized online-only service that's easy to take down?
