I love it because it gives the route personality. You can say 'the route with the fucked up fences' and people will know what you mean. Back on the gameboy it was hard to do better.

Hell, name a good route in Kanto. There are very few worth remembering beyond what pokemon lives there.

This is literally one of the best areas of the game.
>Silence Bridge
>Kino music
>great trainer variety
It feels like a genuine challenge to get to Fuschia.

It makes sense in the world given the rules with trainers and making eye contact that there'd be some place constructed that basically forces people into battles if they want to pass.

Route 6 was /comfy/

I always thought the layout was weird because somebody was going to build his home there, so he tried to block the area with annoying fences around.
Still, it was useless because trainers still went there.

If you picked the bike before the flute, you felt smart because your trip is a quick ride rather than a long march.

I think Kanto has a fair bit of distinction between its routes, the real problem with the region is that so much of the early game is taken up by dungeons like Viridian Forest, Mt Moon, Rock Tunnel, etc that the routes serve more as lead ins rather than proper levels.
Lavender to Fuchsia is really the only time you get an extended bit of gameplay outside of a dungeon in the game.

The route to Mt Moon was half decent I feel like. And the route next to Vermillion City’s Diglett Cave entrance.

that one above Rustboro and below the south entrance of the mountain where you need surf to access and it has a bunch of secret base spots and it's a hidden dead end in the region

I feel like in the old games they expected you never to use repels as a matter of honor
Anonymous No.57964234 [Report]
>>57964141
yeah, repels trivialize caves and make everything too easy. You have some tension if you do kill every wild you encounter by forcing you to save pp. But if you are done exploring and just want to catch the legendary in the cave, you are better up saving your pp by escaping encounters or carrying some leppas.
Anonymous No.57964249 [Report]
>>57964141
Yeah 99% of the time people complain about having to grind they've just been using repels the entire game.

>At minimum Rocket Hideout + Pokemon Tower for Silph Scope + Pokeflute to get past the Snorlax
>Probably want to do Silph Co. takeover as well before Koga or Sabrina to shore up levels between Erika and them
>followed by the Safari Zone, then Silph Co./Cinnabar Mansion
>Seafoam Islands and Power Plant also open up as optional dungeons
>then Victory Road after 8 gyms and Cerulean Cave post-game.
It's dungeons all the way through.
