This one's a case where the problem isn't the localized name, it's that Magikarp got one but Gyarados didn't.
Koiking makes perfect sense to an English speaker. Gyarados doesn't mean anything in English
Last one from me. "Toxtricity" is such a dogshit name I'm baffled it made it past the beta stage
>>57961199Does anybody unironically like this Wind Waker pig and not just because its name reminds them of memes
>>57961214I would have entirely neutral feelings towards it if it had kept the name "Gourton" in English, it would've been an inoffensive and perfectly acceptable route 1 shitter
>>57961230Could Mozart still be alive?
>>57961204Calling it "Magikarp" also fucked up a bunch of king jokes the original script made that I'm sure most westerners aren't even aware of.
every paradox name sounds better in japanese
>>57961208this name is great, i saw you sperg out about it in another thread and all i could think was "does this guy have a speech impediment?"
>>57961764I didn't even remember what this thing was called in English. Tekkaguya is such a better name.
>>57961196 (OP)you're really gonna make me look it up?

>>57961603The Pokefan one is the only one I'm aware of with HGSS keeping Magikarp instead of swapping it with Seaking
>>57961785it's literally on the image. It's a TCG card
>>57961858I know, I meant I didn't remember it until I looked at the picture.
>>57961784I saw his spergout too and it made me elrealize i've been calling it "Toxitricity" this whole time
>>57961764It's weird they didn't even incorporate bamboo into it's name somehow. At least do that if you don't want to mention Kaguya.

I'll never understand this one. The prevolved forms even have arrow-based theming as part of their names. Only reason I can think of is that maybe it sounds too similar to Fearow, but that's bullshit because you have stuff like Zubat and Woobat, Cutiefly and Beautifly etc
Decidueye feels like the name of a Final Fantasy XIV character rather than a Pokemon.
>>57961208Nah, Toxtricity is great. Even if it wasn't, I'm not a fan of Strinder. The german name Riffex is also good.
>>57961196 (OP)Like half the mons at this point feel like they got name changes just because some autistic localizer wanted it changed.
>>57962143Change the English name to Hayaferno
Haya = Hayabusa (reflects the bird it's based on)
Ferno = inferno (reflects the Fire typing it has)
>>57961196 (OP)what was it, Mistu Mimeru?

Wargle was literally perfect
>>57962128Bambooster? It makes more sense than Celesteela.
>>57963721"Female Mister Mime" doesn't sound dumb?
>>57963750well it's not called "Female Mister Mime" it's just called Mr. Mime
>>57961196 (OP)>>57963716>named after a move that's not even exclusive to it in Gen 1 nor is it that good to begin withWhat a cuck.
Also I wonder if the Japanese localization of Detective Pikachu had to come up with an explanation for the Mr. Mime scene since it makes no sense without the context of the name.
>>57961208The toxtricity of our city
>>57963754I have a mighty need for some context
>>57963765Female Mr. Mimes are called female Mr. Mimes.
>>57963846No they are just called mr. Mime. Female birds are called birds.
>>57961219I'm glad it induces rage in people instead of just being forgettable.
>>57964366I didn't even remember what its English name even was until I saw that post.
>>57961764Celesteela is a cool name though. Celestial and Steel pun, to pay homage to it's space princess origin in a way that makes sense to the average american.
>>57964370But when you did remember you got upset. I like that. You wouldn't have given a shit if somebody brought up watchog or whatever.
>>57963728Wargle sounds like gargling balls. It took me a moment to realize it was supposed to be war and eagle.
>>57963728I don't think they wanted to have an AMERICAN eagle pokemon with "war" in it's name.
>>57964738how the hell do you get a name more unoriginal than Seel? that's literally the plant it's based on, no spelling changes.
>>57964784I do not care what you have to say. Everyone knows what a seal is. Not everyone knows what a rafflesia is. And that word sounds cool.
>>57961196 (OP)I love mr mime and I think his name is good the japanese one is kind of boring

>>57964784How the hell is "Ruffresia" closer to rafflesia than "Seel" is to seal? Do you have brain damage?
>>57964886Its weird because "Chance!" or "Chansu!" is something the Japanese actually say to invoke good luck or just a positive exclamation as a borrowed word from English. Seems that the localizers were doing a bit of the Yugioh Raigeki or Gishki thing of translating something back into its Japanese version when the origional was in Engllish to either preserve the exoticism or just as a translation gag.
>>57963728This one's bait, Braviary is a fucking awesome name
>>57961196 (OP)>Catch a Mr. Mime>FemaleOne of the mons that should've got a gender difference
>>57961196 (OP)Mime is fine, they just should have eliminated the honorific Mr or adding Miss to the females
>>57961214I love Lechonk for its design, what I hate is their bland evolutions.
>>57961856What's interesting about this to me is how the need to have Magikarp's level be much high for balancing purposes increases the prize money for this battle because of how prize money directly relates to the highest level of the opponent. The joke actually affects gameplay.
>>57964085Not if you want to specify that the bird is female. Anything including Mr. in the name shouldn't be female, because that's dumb.
>>57963789The scene makes sense for both names. Mimes are known for making invisible barriers.
>>57964085Female birds are called hens.
>>57965431Should've just been called Mimey like how Ash's mom nicknamed it.
>>57965608Isn't mime jr just miemin or similar in Japanese? Why did they feel the need to make it jr?
Mimey and Mimemin would have been great
>>57963728Wait, that's actually it's Japanese name? I thought that was a /vp/ or general fan name like smugleaf and wotter.
>>57966363No, it's Manene. "Mane" is nip for "to mimic".
>>57966469It's Warrgle.
>>57964886It's doubly retarded because they then named the evolution "Blissey". Luckey -> Blissey works a lot better than Chansey -> Blissey.
>>57965605Petition to rename Mr.Mime to Mimecock.
>>57966981I legit have no fucking thing what this guy is even called in English. Was it some pun on origami?
>>57966992Kartana
Something about katana since it's a samurai.
>>57966998Oh.
Fuck, I'm sure I've known that at some point, but if I had just read the name "Kartana" with no context I wouldn't even have connected it to Pokemon, let alone Kamitsurugi.
