Let's everyone do our best to go one thread without bringing up he who must not be named.
>>57964210 (OP)Why is that pic so blurry
>>57964213i would never shitpost ironically
Fuck it, we're doing this a day early.
The 2nd build of [name pending] is ready.
https://files.catbox.moe/veum6z.7z
I consider this build fully playable if you only want to run around in the battle tower. The PWT and Battle Factory are available to play around in, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut they need a hell of a lot of work, so I wouldn't spend too much time there.
If you have any questions, let me know. Also, let me know if I accidentally made another soft lock in the the move tutor menu. After this build, I'll hare one more before going dark, but that one's going to take much longer since I plan to make the gathering areas next.
>>57964277Could you give an overview of what your game is about?
>>57964387It's a battle tower sym.
The idea is that you can make your team (or remake it from another game), and just jump into the post game. That's the simplest way to put it.
NPCs

๐
>>57964277>but that one's going to take much longerJust to illustrate that point, this is all the NPCs of named characters I currently have installed in the game. I'm going to have to write dialog and create teams for each and every one of them. On top of that, I'm going to have to make rooms for them to be in, and a series of halls to connect them. God help me, I"m going to have to code an elevator.
And I'll be installing even more NPCs from other games too. So yeah, this will be months of work on the next phase.
>>57964914>everyone is in RSE style>except for the RSE protagonist
>>57964921Yeahhh, I work with what I can find.
I've already accepted that I'm going to have to mix RSE and FRLG. I don't find it TOO jarring, and it's not like I have the skill to convert sprites from one style to another.
>>57964933Why not just use the Ruby sprites for Brendan? It's not like they're something you would need to create on your own.
>>57964277>>57964914Good shit bro, and good luck with the rest.
Man, seeing all those gen 3 style Alolan sprites is making me want to see a gen 7 demake one day.
>>57964937>Why not just use the Ruby sprites for Brendan?Because that's just what Essentials comes with by default. But you are right, I should change it over. I"ll add that to the long todo list.
Are there any fangames that don't use rpgmaker+essentials? I absolutely despise rpgmaker games, every one of them has that distinct rpgmaker feeling and plays like jank. Like has anyone used their own engine or something different.
Also to the anon who answered before, I've played pokerogue and tower defence
>>57965482Unclear what you mean by fangame, because literally every ROMhack is a fangame that fits this description. What kind of gameplay are you looking for besides not being RPGM?
>>57965543Anything that's not a romhack i.e. pokemon games that don't run natively on the console emulators.
>>5796548299.9% of fangames are romhacks or essentials.
Nothing else feels like a pokemon game.
>>57965543Romhack = hack of a ROM
Fangame = not a rom hack (but still made by fans for free)
>>57965482I got nothing big smoke, you play Pokemon Ranger yet?
What you think of David's Gym Leaders?
>>57966114Normal - No puzzle
Grass - Cut down small trees to obtain wood to build a bridge. Requires the HM for Cut
Water - Navigate through currents while avoiding whirlpools.
Poison - Go through a room filled with noxious gas to flip a switch which will clear it out. You have a limited amount of steps to do so.
Electric - Guitar Hero-styled rhythm minigame.
Flying - Pushing rocks with Strength to create a barricade against the strong gusts of wind.
Dragon - Navigate through a Dragon Quest-styled castle dungeon with only 3 Pokรฉmon with you. It will have uncatchable wild Pokรฉmon in it.
Psychic - A memory-based game. Get an answer wrong and you have to fight a trainer.
Has anyone had trouble getting bridges to work like theyโre supposed to do?
>>57964213by posting this, you're still bringing attention to him
>>57966115>all some form of fetch quest hallways with extra steps, except psychic which people will do wrong on purpose for extra exp and prize moneyat that point why bother
>>57966368What kind of bridges? In what engine?
>>57966495>all some form of fetch quest hallways with extra stepsAren't a lot of Gym Puzzles like that?
>>57966368Sorry this isn't relevant to your question.
>>57964914As of now I've made ad grand total of 4 parties.
Yeah, this is going to take some time. I'm trying to keep them game accurate, but someone like Archie only has 3 Pokemon, so I have to be a little creative. I am giving some trainers legendary Pokemon for their Hotel NPC parties, but those will be removed for their PWT parties.
Not every trainer is going to be in the PWT since I don't have walking sprites for all of them.
anyone here have any experience working with the pokecryst disassembly 16 bit expansion? i've tried asking pret but never get far and am running into some hurdles with my hack
I like to think I have gotten pretty good at gen 1 asm hacking. I am looking for a new challenge. What is a QoL feature from later games that no one has back ported yet?
>>57968911every cry from later gens, that actually sounds sort of like the cry of the later gen pokemon, but is made via the gameboy sound chip and not some shitty wav processing like pikachu's voice in yellow

I've been wondering if it's even possible to replicate Giratina's distortion world on GBA, at the very least it seems like it would take a lot of work to do so. But what if I just wanted to replicate the spiralling cloud effect that Giratina's last area portion has, would that be feasible? I haven't seen any examples of it working for other romhacks. Alternatively, if someone could point me to Turnback Cave Tilesets I'd also appreciate it, Aqua repo doesn't seem to have it
>>57969330Doing a 1:1 recreation is impossible because of the lack of 3D. The spiral is probably possible to do, but it would take a lot of effort. I think Unbound's version of Distortion world is the best GBA remake of it and even it doesn't have that effect.
>>57968911Rotom Dex randomly interrupting you, asking questions, and giving you overpowered timed passive boosts. Don't even have to check to tell you no one has done it. Probably holds true for gba and essentials.
>>57969448The GBA is capable of 3D on some level. The Distortion World doesn't get too crazy with it.
Is there a Gen 1 colorization hack that doesnโt replace the sprites with Gen 2 sprites?
>>57969958I don't think so, because none of the gen 1 battle sprites were designed with color in mind.
>>57969301It's been a while since I played Wild...
>>5796845798/3 of the hotel sets
For the next build, I'm going to have to make around 150ish teams.
98 for the hotel + however many I need for the PWT Kanto cup, Hoenn cup, and Alola cup. I don't think I'll make the PWT monotype cups, but I might make one or two.

Decided to improve another room that could connect to the bottom right door in my other post. The waterfall looks like shit unfortunately, I don't see a left corner piece that complements water, might be a skill issue idk
>>57972091I've been mapping for awhile and I still struggle with dungeons. nice job imo
>>57972033It's a nice looking map, although there are some tile errors. The fact that you were able to make it in just an hour is very impressive.
>>57972091>The waterfall looks like shit unfortunately, I don't see a left corner piece that complements water, might be a skill issue idkThere's definitely a left corner piece without snow in the background, but note that GF didn't even use the corner pieces for their waterfall (pic related).

Is there any way to get the log bridge things in picrel into FireRed? Just noticed they're nowhere to be found in the cave tiles or anywhere else and the brick bridge thing in generic outdoor tileset isn't gonna work, at least not horizontally

okay so those boardwalk tiles in picrel could be usable for bridge pieces that allow for over/under travel, but they're only available in the lavender town tileset. If I prefab them they're still only accessible with that tileset selected, not in cave or anywhere else.
If I can just get them moved up to the "primary" tileset with the pokemon center and basic water and terrain and stuff, I think that'll work, but I don't see how I'm meant to do that. There appear to be some junk tiles that could be replaced with no consequence, they look like glitched currents with no behavior assigned to them, but idk. Can't find isolated tiles in the game folders either. Halp

Blindly asking, What is the best way to make a game in your guys general opinion? How much coding does one gotta absorb to make a PWT ripoff?
>>57974694>How much coding does one gotta absorb to make a PWT ripoff? Not much. I'm working on a PWT for my game right now with the trainers here
>>57964914 IDK how it could be done in a romhack, but in essentials, look for "Pokemon World Tournament (Unofficial v21.1 Port)" by Manurocker95 over at Eevee Expo. The hardest part about getting it up and running is:
1. importing the map.
2. You will need to edit "001_Settings" inside the \Plugins\Pokemon World Tournament folder.
3. when you install it, it won't work out of the box. it comes with a list of trainers that will need to be in your PBS folder. As long as the file is "trainers_[whatever]" it will work, or you can manually cut and paste all the trainers into the normal "trainers" file.
I found this overwhelming at first, but after a day or 2 of fiddling I got it. If you need an example, my PWT in

Fuck it I'll just post what I've been working on that I want bridges for. Obv this is incomplete and a shitshow at the moment. Early game cave, right side is the entrance, terrain and water kind of snake along and interlock with each other, first pass is on foot on the higher level, later when you have surf you can come back take the water path go below the bridges and access new stuff and areas. Or that was the plan anyway. Heavy union cave influence obv
If over/under bridges are a no go I could do some underpass stuff with the cave door things where you just surf through a smaller tunnel underneath, I did that anyway off to the left since those brick board things don't really work horizontally, but I don't know how I feel about that, those ins and outs could be immersion breakers. But it could also be additional little rooms to put things in. Idk
Why would they not include the bridge code from R/S reeeeee
Whatโs a good DS emulator for iOS?
>>57974877Retroarch seems like the best option. Either the melonDS core or the DeSmuME core.
>>57974611The actual graphics for those tiles are in data/tilesets/secondary/lavender_town/tiles.png. You can copy-paste them into another tileset's image file. There's barely any space in the primary general tileset, so you might want to add the tiles to your secondary cave tileset. You can see in porymap's tileset editor that those bridges use palette 8, which belongs to the secondary tileset, so you should copy data/tilesets/secondary/lavender_town/palettes/08.pal over one of the palettes in your target tileset. In the cave tileset palette 12 seems to not be used. Once the tiles and their colors exist in the tileset, you can build placeable metatiles out of them in porymap's tileset editor.
>>57974693Yes, the game is based on Ruby/Sapphire which had bridges.

Been a while, caught some back to back 3 day bans without any wrongdoing and also been travelling recently.
I've added a "curse" system to the game recently. Mainly designed to incorporate unique challenges to each run - players get to choose one from two options after the first boss battle.
Each curse has an upside which arent necessarily interesting but help me balance the playing experiences of each curse.
Some examples
>Twisted Spoon (pictured)
>Soothing Bell - swap health and attack of all pokemon on battle start, start each shop with 1 extra gold
>Credit Card - Pokemon no longer get XP from normal battles, start each shop eith 2 extra gold

Have a question related to Snakewood. RetroAchievements has the patches that will hash to their list but it comes with a normal patch, and then an "(Alt)" patch. Does anyone have any idea what this is about? The dev only released a "Fix" patch that made it stop crashing as much and they don't typically leave lower versions hashed, especially ones that are that broken. Does anyone who has done it through RA have any idea what this is? I don't think it's the post-decomp version of the patch that backports the gen 9 mechanics.

>>57979527No I meant something like this
https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Accumula_Town#Variable_scoring
there should be a hack that has the elite 4 actually be in the level 90-100 range with decent ai. you know, actual elite trainers ,and the gym progression should be every 10 levels so you get the last badge at level ~80
>>57982345Pokemon isn't really designed for you to hit level 100. You stop learning new moves well before that.
>>57982345Reborn does this. 18 gyms with level cap going up about 5 levels between each.
Clover gets up to the 80s with the E4, and the postgame level-scales and can easily get to level 100 by the final boss.
>>57982345That's dumb.
Here's the thing you fail to understand. Around level 80, maybe even 75, levels stop mattering. No really, the difference between a battle with a level 80 and a level 100 isn't as much as you might think.
Level 50 to 70 is about as high as you can go and still have the elite 4 feel like they are stronger than the 8th gym that was 5 to 10 levels below them.
Also, I've played hacks that have a 10 level between gyms, and all of them suck with game balance.
>>57980312Downloaded this as well thank you. This seems more up my alley
>>57982397okay, then include a 75-80 level cap for all your mons before you go to the elite 4 and make the level progression between gyms 5 instead of 10
the reason the elite 4 feels more difficult is because it's a gambit of 5 trainers with no pokemon center with more niche types, with the end being your rival and a mix of them, not just levels
>>57981670See, I was thinking it might be that but it also got a patch a couple years back specifically to take advantage of the decomp's progress with backporting current gen mechanics so I'm at a loss as to what it might be without dumping several hours into each version. The forum only has information about years old patches that aren't even in use anymore and the comments don't talk about it at all.
>>57982638The normal version is most likely the broken version. The difference between the two roms is only a few bytes with the alt version just removing some code from the normal patch.
>>57982453>level capNo, that's even worse. Level caps are just lazy game design.
>>57982722And herein lies the fundamental problem in a game with levels. There's no good way to make a game designed around them because you have to account for the fringe retards who will deliberately powerlevel to the maximum, and then complain the game is too easy because they completely defied the level progression just because "the game didn't stop me, so clearly this was intended design!"
Yet at the same time, level caps are a concession of how flawed the level system is, but still adhering to it because a total reinvention would take far, far, far too much effort for the average fangame maker, and such a departure might as well not even be a turn-based RPG unless the whole thing was entirely overhauled to now function within the context of a level-less system.
>>57982754NTA but wtf are you talking about man?
The problem with Pokรฉmon is people making "ultra kaizo hacks meant to be nuzlocke" when in reality Pokรฉmon is a game about expressing yourself: you catch, train and use whatever you like OR if you feel daring maybe do a monotype or some kind of challenge run.
Pokรฉmon difficulty NEEDS to be easy so that you could use anything in the main game
If you want difficulty (within the vanilla games) look at the various Battle facilities or online play

Hi guys! I had an idea for a Romhack/Fangame, does it sound good?
>60-80 new fossilmon alongside the normal ones
>based around the concept of the sinnoh underground, crawl around a vast cave network mining for treasures
>treasures can range from useful held items to evolutionary items to the fossils that you use to prepare your team
>regular world has fossilmons running rampant around the world that you can't catch through regular means
>starter pokemon is a fossil you must resurrect yourself.
Was gonna make this a new thread but remembered this exists. If you can't tell, I like the sinnoh underground and wish there was a game based around it.
>>57983110Just play spectrobes, it does fossil excavation way better.
>>57983115...okay, but counterpoint; pokemon autism.
>>57983110Pokemon Mineral is kinda like that, although i seem to recall it goes with adding hisui pokemon as fossils rather than entirely new ones
>>57980060This is my currrent team. I just defeated Hardy, the rock Gym Leader.
Not sure in the box mons cause they are scattered all over the place. I had lost a bunch of progress and recovered an older save so it's disorganized. I have stuff like a Gyarados stashed away though
>>57981199Thanks that gives me some pointers. Some of these hours were from leaving the game running, others were from breeding. Though now I got the incubator so I doubt I'll ever have this issue again.
>>57983232My box
Additionally: is there any way to run this in a phone or a 3DS or something like that? OR someone figured a way?
I know this isn't a rom hack but I don't properly know the differences and limits of an Essentials. If I could play this handheld or in a tablet it'd make my life much easier.
>>57983232I did basically the bare minimum of side quest and only got easily accessible mega stones/Z-Moves/TMs.
Also nice team (way better than my team honestly lol)
>>57983236Pretty sure you can use easyrpg on 3DS (I used it to play Yume Nikki/OFF) but I doubt it would run a Reborn-like (only supports RPG maker 2000/2003, Reborn uses RPG maker XP iirc)
>is there any way to run this in a phone or a 3DS or something like that?
>phone
Shit, didn't read that.
You can use Joiplay + RPG maker Plugin to pretty much play any Essentials game on phone (100% that Reborn is supported)
>>57982754>you have to account for the fringe retards who will deliberately powerlevel to the maximum, and then complain the game is too easy because they completely defied the level progression just because "the game didn't stop me, so clearly this was intended design!"You don't have to account for those people. If they want to play the game in that way and it hurts their experience, that's on them. You don't have to cater to every single retard who will play your game. Fuck them. If they cry about it, ignore them. Who gives a shit?
>>57983243Thanks, I have been having help of my brother that played in tournaments so I tried to get Pokemons he'd use.
>>57983247>>57983251Holy shit really? Thank you very much
>>57983236You have no idea how much it annoys me that the background is a 7x5 grid while the pokemon are placed in a 6x6 grid.
>>57983247>>57983261If this works, keep us up to date. There are some essentials games I wouldn't mind playing on my 3DS.
>>57982378just give out more moves then? event moves. really expensive tutor moves. maybe even a few egg moves by 85? options to change abilities? heck, maybe you can turn it shiny once you reach level 100.
just getting into it, any good games I should play? Seems like Unbound and Odyssey are popular
>>57983580Unbound & Gaia were fun for me. Depends on what you want
>>57983580Check out the hacks made by Drayano, Buffel Saft, and Dio Vento if you want an enhanced experience of the official games as a start. Maybe as far as Radical Red by Soupercell.
For more original and transformative ideas I'd say Unbound, Gaia, Peridot, Super Mariomon, and Glazed might be a good start.
For stuff kinda in-between check out Rocket Edition, Black and White 3 Genesis, Gold and Silver 97 Reforged, and maybe Pisces. I still need to play that last one, a 1.6 update is supposed to drop for it pretty soon.
Would it be a problem if I put the PokeGear in my project even though it doesn't take place in the Johto region?
>>57983656don't do this it creates mustard gas
>>57983656Why would that be a problem? Put whatever you want in your hack dude.
>>57983656Cell phones and PDAs existed outside of Japan at the time. Why not?
>>57983656you can, but make sure to keep your region <2014 as that's about when every teenager stopped getting flip phones
>>57983656I think thatโs too dated. How about a Porygon2 phone?
First time trying to use PKHeX.
I only want to put a Poliwag into box 1 for a Big Blue game but everytime I try playing with the resulting save, it gives me the "Save file has been deleted..." message.
What exactly am I doing wrong?
>>57964213Why is keine-sensei on /vp/...?
>>57984002Maybe the tool just doesn't work with that hack.
>>57984114Huh.
How do I confirm when that's the case?
>>57983645No problem dude. Hope you enjoy whatever you try
>>57984722When it doesn't work.
>>57983645Anytime bro.
>>57983656I don't see why not.
>>57984002Dunno abou this hack, but PKHeX doesn't work with most big new hacks these days. The decomps move and change so much data in the roms to the point that older cheat codes and save editors can fuck a lot of things up, sadly. I'm hoping more hacks stay open-source or include a Debug mode going forward.
>>57985040PKHeX looks for specific data. If anything is moved around in the save file, PKHeX won't work.
>>57982652Alright, thanks for checking for me because otherwise I would have had no clue for hours.
>>57985047You know, I'm surprised it doesn't have romhack support in general considering there's not many needs for updates overall outside of once a game + DLC. Just make the major ones compatible or have people vote for making certain ones compatible. Hell, they could make a "Romhack" section which has user-created plugins that allow romhack developers to manually provide a plugin that allows PKHeX to work for their romhack's specific data.
>>57985059There's a lot of hacks that all change up stuff in their own way. It's not worth keeping up with all of them.
>>57985074That's why I think making a general plugin system would be a far better use of time. The devs themselves would be responsible for their own romhack's plugin and all the PKHeX team would be responsible for would be maintaining the system itself works in general.
>>57985078The program is open source, they could always just make a fork of it. But it's also a big undertaking that probably isn't worth it.
>>57966114Only the hex rip off is worth it.
>>57985078Most romhackers would not bother to develop cheating tools for their hacks.
>>57985084Not to mention that a lot of dedicated devs wouldn't care for it to begin with, Unbound locks you out of post-game if you play on Sandbox mode, some devs heavily discourage and delete any cheat code talk in their servers (understandable I guess when people start reporting "bugs" that they manufactured, but some just don't want players deviating from what's normally possible), and some even implement anti-cheat. Those devs might see save editor incompatibility as a feature.
What exactly do I open in Microsoft Visual Studio to codefag? Like what file? The .gba?
>>57977149All move tutors and lost moves restored in the .PBS files.
Back to writing trainers. I estimate it takes me 30 to 40 minuets to create a team of 6 for a trainer. That means it's going to be 30 t0 40 more hours or work to make the teams for the NPCs scattered throughout the hotel. On top of that, I still need to make rooms for them to populate and how I'll need to make even MORE sets for their PWT teams.
Yeah, the path to the final public build is going to be a long one. On the brigth side, I got the pokedex up and running alongside the plug in to let the player see the pokemon's base stats and movepool.
>>57985520Couldn't you write a Script to automate that? (Or at the very least speed up the process)
>>57985759I don't know how to code, so writing a script is beyond me. I think Debug mode has a PBS editor. I really should try playing around with that. I tried to play around with showdown to see if they export button out out text that was at least close. to what I could use, but it wasn't.

>>57986626all good, thanks for the help
looked for a romhack that lets you capture both versions mons and evolve trade mons without having to trade so i can solo it and golden popped up as one of the results, sounded like what i wanted (as close to vanilla as possible but able to catch both versions mons in one game and the trade mons able to evolve without trading) so i figured i'd give it a shot
Thinking of making a visual overhaul romhack of some FR/LG areas and did a mockup of pallet town and route 1. How's it look?
>>57986642layout is cool, though this might not get much attention if it's just that. maybe you could collab with someone else who's making a FR hack, but hasn't touched the map
A romhack where instead of Pokemon you capture enemy soldiers and combatants to form your own mercenary company in a world controlled and ruled over by PMCs and various warlords. Travel to different towns and cities to topple said rival PMCs and Warlords while recruiting and capturing new units along the way using the same gameplay mechanics as a standard Pokemon game.
>>57986642Seems fine. Keeps the essentials in place while extending the route. Maybe a few too many swerves but the brown path keeps the progression clear.
>>57964210 (OP)I am curious about the OP.
>>57986720https://archive.org/details/spongebob-version
>>57986681>A romhack where instead of Pokemon you capture enemy soldiersUnironically get off the board. This is a stupid question to propose on the fucking pokemon rom hacking thread on the pokemon board. No I don't want soldiers. I want pokemon. Go make a pokemon clone with this concept on your own time. God knows billions already exist. Actual stupid fucking monkey.
>>57985107As a hacker myself can give this tidbit too. Not every hack but how pokemon saves work is a thing called save block. Essentially the save file is bloated twice over as there is your save file and there is an extra one that exists there if the game or data gets corrupted even if this is VERY rare. There is a tutorial and tip on how to get rid of and free of this save block space giving more room to the rom. This fucks with save editors though like PKhex. I did this to my own rom hack not to fuck with players but to give myself more space but it makes PKhex not work on the game anymore.
>>57986766What are you using the extra save space for?
>>57986681SMT style recruiting would fit this kind of thing better than Pokemon catching mechanics

maybe grab a hippowdon as a beefy wall that'll also setup sand for your excadrill and rock types
other than that you seem to be fine when it comes to mons but I guess it wouldn't hurt to get some more options for variety/backup if you run into something your usual mons struggle with
>>57983290not just a mismatched grid square count but some are cutoff
>6x6 gridactually 6x5
>>57986846I wonder how that would translate into an actual Pokรฉmon game, it would be funny if Psyquic types/Legendaries had actual dialog while all other mons communicate with bodily language
Are there any written or checklist-style decomp tutorials out there instead of video? I'm watching Team Aqua Hideout but I find him difficult to follow. Concerned at the moment with adding moves. (My own moves, not Gen4+ moves, maybe that's a bad idea for a newfag)
One of them is sort of a Focus Punch riff. It differs in that if the user gets hit in the interim, their attack stat goes up one stage, and they still execute the move. It follows that I would want to just take focus Punch, copy it and alter it accordingly, but any FOCUS_PUNCH instance I can find has nothing about how the move fails if the user is hit so idk what to do there.
Maybe I could take Revenge instead as my jumping-off point, but then how would I get the FP style charge-up animation at the start of the turn?
Maybe I'm just shooting too high on this
>>57986881>hippowdon as a beefy wall that'll also setup sand for your excadrill and rock typesNoted
>you seem to be fine when it comes to mons but I guess it wouldn't hurt to get some more options for variety/backup if you run into something your usual mons struggle withPretty much my team doesn't have a good answer when Reborn throws those slightly overleveled Pokemon against you. For example: when Solaris had a rematch he used a level 93 Mega Garchomp. While Garchomp does lose speed in Mega Evolution, it still outsped my level 89 Garchomp EV trained and hits hard enough to oneshot most of my stuff even neutrally. In the end I won by switching from Rotom to the Ferrotorn back and forth to scratch damage it to death and trick it into using disadvantageous attacks for both to survive. I couldn't do anything else with that team.
Later I was thinking it over and realized, that was one of the situations I was meant to think beyond typical metagame smogon. Like, if I used a Noivern with anything to boost its attack like a Dragon Plate, it likely would have enough speed and deal enough damage to kill it.
Right now my goal is to get 300 different pokemon cause the game just gave me a Froakie and there is an NPC in Agate that gives you Ice Beam at the 300 count. I'd have all the tools to replicate my brother's real life Greninja and that should have the versatility on demand I need.
>>57987100Look for the text of Focus Punch failing(I think it has a unique string) and go backwards from there.
>>57987100>Are there any written or checklist-style decomp tutorials out there instead of video? That's what the pokeemerald wiki is for. Though I don't think any of the tutorials there will help you with that specific idea.
Had an idea for a romhack where every evolution line was split and cobbled this together as a demonstration. You'd get a Chimchar and it'd evolve either into Monferno or into Gibburn (Fire/Normal). Then Monferno would evolve either into Infernape or the gorilla I didn't come up with a name for (Fire/Ground), while Gibburn would evolve into the gorilla or Infernape.
Wasn't quite sure yet how you'd choose which of the two to evolve into. Also I'm not all that good of a spriter, I cobbled these sprites together out of shit I found in those fanart collages from a while ago.
Thoughts?
>>57987674Sounds like a graphics-heavy project which is not ideal if you aren't good with sprites.

I'm cursed to always add little details and overcomplicate shit. For fossil restoration, should I show something in the tube when it's ready and have the player walk up and take it himself instead of relying on an NPC to hand it over? These tubes were originally just for the Mewtwo dungeon, but another one-off would signal that NPC is important. A lot of people miss him.
>>57988887Need one for my family, my neighbors family, and the dogs. Looks nice.
>>57988978That would be pretty neat, little flavour things like that are never a bad idea if you think it's worth the effort. The Rugosa lab has a lot of scientists so it wouldn't hurt to have the fossil guy stand out more, the test tubes are a cool looking asset too.

Doubly so with the inspiration for it, which was the abandoned lab in Jurassic Park 3 where there's a bunch of dinosaur fetuses floating in big glass tubes. I suppose that fits fossil mons as well as Mewtwo.

I literally mapped out an entire region, planned encounters and trainers etc, then it came time to code and it was like hitting a brick wall. I still plan to do it at some point but it's been a couple months now since I touched it. fuck me.
anyway nice maps, you going for a sevii like archipelago?
>>57989871>>57989875do you have a fetish for long winding paths or something
>>57989906Yeah Sevii is my favorite section of any Pokemon game so that's probably gonna rear its head with everything I do. The continuous linear town-route-town-route structure doesn't quite hit as much for me.
Come to think of it I probably shouldn't have sealed the town off to the north/west the way I did, there should be other stuff in that direction. Lean fully into the Sevii.
>>57989994Sorry sweetie but this is gonna be Gligar/Skarmory/Sneasel country, and canonically they like cliffs and jagged terrain.
>>57989871>Still too stupid to figure out coding and scriptingIs there anything in particular you would like help with?
>>57989994Don't get poison stung :)
>>57990034It just breaks my brain as a whole. But my particular concern right now is adding *original* moves (and abilities, later), as I don't want this to just be "what if Gen [4-9] but in gen 3?", not only because that's already been done many times but if that was my goal I could just get the emerald expansion or get CFRU and be on my merry way.
Like I'm watching Team Aqua Hideout's videos, and I can follow it until I can't. Moves and battle_moves, okay. Battle_scripts, ehhh we're going up on the curb a little bit. But once battle_util, script commands, structs, macros and all that shit join the party seemingly out of nowhere, it's Joever.
Good example of where this is all breaking down for me; I posted about Focus Punch above. We all know what it does - charge up before anything else, if the mon gets hit it fails, if the mon doesn't get hit the move fires. In the seemingly orderly battle_moves file that I can mentally process, there is NOTHING about any of this behavior under Focus Punch. In there, Focus Punch just looks like a 150 power fighting move with -3 priority. So where is all the other shit that defines the move coming from? What's triggering the charge-up, the autofail if attacked, and even if I do track down whatever gibberish is dictating this behavior in the sea of other, seemingly un-ordered gibberish on some other file, how do I identify what's relevant for those new moves I might want to make? It just goes from reasonable to bonkers in the blink of an eye for me.
>G04RYbased relevant captcha
>>57981203Do those gimmicks stack, or do they have some short of limit for the sake of competive play?
>>57990095Custom moves can indeed be quite challenging to implement. There's a reason for why so few hacks have completely custom moves.
>In the seemingly orderly battle_moves file that I can mentally process, there is NOTHING about any of this behavior under Focus Punch. In there, Focus Punch just looks like a 150 power fighting move with -3 priority. So where is all the other shit that defines the move coming from? The most important part of a moves behavior in the move's definition is the effect field. It selects one of the behaviors defined in data/battle_scripts_1.s. The move effects are written with their own scripting language, but that language is so limited that a lot of move effects either need scripting commands to be specifically created for them (which allows you to write C code for the effect), or the effect is at least partially hardcoded into the C code of the battle engine.
Let's for example look at focus punch. The effect is defined here:
https://github.com/pret/pokeemerald/blob/master/data/battle_scripts_1.s#L191
And the script for it is at:
https://github.com/pret/pokeemerald/blob/master/data/battle_scripts_1.s#L2260
Seems simple enough, but wait... That's what it does on the second turn. Where's code for the first turn?
https://github.com/pret/pokeemerald/blob/master/data/battle_scripts_1.s#L3709
But that's not the script that's assigned to the move! How does that script actually start?
https://github.com/pret/pokeemerald/blob/master/src/battle_main.c#L4919
I guess they hardcoded that script to be started in the battle engine because it needs to start earlier than normal move effects.
As you can see, the effects are not always implemented in a straightforward way.
If I was making custom moves, I'd probably start by looking at scripts of existing moves to figure out how much of the effect can be done with scripting. If C code is needed, you can search for the code of existing effects to get an idea of where your new code should go.
What's going on with the new version of Clover? Is there an expected release date? Are going to add gay shit like anti-speedup?
>>57990679They're still chipping away at it, no ETA yet. And yes there will still be some sort of anti-zoomer technology implemented.
>>57990834Latest sneak peak is of "HM Memory". Once a Pokรฉmon has learned an HM, it will still be able to use it in the field even after the move has been forgotten.
>>57990847>Once a Pokรฉmon has learned an HM, it will still be able to use it in the field even after the move has been forgotten.Uh? Why add it like that? Might as well just let your mons be able to use HMs without learning the HM proper (only by having the respective Gym badge and HM)
>>57991078Ignoring the obvious logistical issue there's also the fact that it will take memory per mon so it's certainly not the best approach if you want as much space for content as possible
In trying to be "cool" the dev team forgot how to be efficient it seems
>>57990115Pretty sure it's the standard limitations for Megas/Z-moves (only one per team)

>>57991091I don't see how that would limit the amount of content in the game.
>>57991120No but I do have a bit of experience on game design.
Don't get me wrong pretty much every romhack/fangame let's you use HMs without properly teaching them which works since HMs are rarely useful in actual battle (with the exception of stuff like Surf or Waterfall)
But this seems like they tried to reinvent the wheel, a wheel that's pretty much solved at this point
>>57991134It's a bit small but when you are in a system such a ls the GBA every Byte matters, as said the system is not bad but rather a bit clumsy
>>57991151Every byte matters only if you need every byte for your idea. Using more space doesn't make a difference if you don't.
>>57991091>it will take memory per monYou could do it with a bit vector, and every mon already has a number of variables to keep track of. Adding one more byte wouldn't change that much.
>>57991166>>57991162Agreed, it wouldn't change that much unless you are optimizing everything to fit all your ideas into the game BUT why add that byte per mon if you could just do
>>57991078 like other games do? It's not like the HM memory is revolutionary, much less useful when compared with the "use HMs without teaching the move to a mon" system
I find that odd, still I hope that Clover 2.0 will be a good game

>>57991532it's not coming out lol
>>57991496Crystal Legacy is good if you don't mind some light rebalancing and a slight difficulty increase. Perfect Crystal if you want a more vanilla 251 hack.
>>57991532Sage is for all intents and purposes permafucked, it got co-opted by discord trannies with unregulated perfectionism and a burning desire to scrub all the 4chan influence from the project.
>>57993485a normal pokemon game set in the ranger regions would be pretty cool
>>57993451Hypothetically speaking, would the PBS files and sprites be available anywhere? No reason.
>>57993555So, there was never even a demo or alpha build out out to the public.
Shame, I had an idea, but without that... Oh well.

>>57990246Thanks for the response anon, honestly this way of putting it was easier to digest than anything else I've consulted. Just have to try and learn C code I suppose and forget the Pokemon part of it.
Speaking of which, Visual Studio keeps bugging me to install some C++ bullshit every time I open it. I doubt it's malware or anything fishy since this is a brand new laptop. Thus far I've been disregarding the notifications but would that be likely to help at all?
I have a massive spergsheet I've been maintaining for a while that's basically my plans for the game, the "original moves/abilities" tab might be taking some hits unless I can find something similar in FRLG to piggyback them on. Feels batman.
>>57964224it's not you just have bad eyesight
>>57991216>The sequels are not good, but they have some cool moments.Lightning almost never strikes twice I guess, I'll temper my expectations.
>>57993768W gaslight.
>>57993954The first one is genuinely one of the best movies of all time. It's a big drop in quality after that.

>>57994792>twenty bucks>for a glorified romhack
>>57994792>less mons than rbyno thanks. gotta have at least rse to be worth buying for 20$
>>57994792I hate games that try to ape the 8-bit style while breaking so many rules of it.
>>57994792some of the designs are cute, but the game overall feels slow and clunky
>>57995898>trainer tells pokemon to use cut>instuctions unclear, trainer is now cut in half
>>57995898I mean, it works but it feels a bit backwards, most people will probably burn a move slot for all the HMs then replace that slot with a TM
It's not like it added any depth to the game
>>57995916>Would you like to teach your Pokemon the move Surf?>Yes>NoWow so deep
>>57995998That's not what I mean, the HM memory seems to work like this:
>Teach HM to a mon on the same slot>repeat until all HMs are learned>Teach a TM on that slotInstead of
>just have the HM on your bag to use the HMIt's dumb, it's just extra steps for nothing
>>57996103You act as if the moves themselves are only good for being used outside of battle, which isn't true at all.
>>57996144Most of them are.
>>57996144See
>>57991147They are pretty useless in mainline (outside of Surf/Waterfall)
Yeah sure Clover buffed HMs but that doesn't matter for the HM memory since it only let's you use them in the Overworld which is my point
Even worse, if they are such good moves then why make the HM memory in the first place???
>>57996177To prevent softlocks, simple as
What's a Pokemon-appropriate synonym for dipshit, as in "I just played you, dipshit."
Context is an evil faggot betraying the MC's group.
Inb4 just say dipshit
>>57996183>To prevent softlocks, simple asSuch as?
Even that doesn't work, in most cases you still have the HM on you and a mon that can learn it
>>57996188Depends, its the game trying to be E for Everyone or Edgykino?
>>57996188>I JUST PLAYED YOU, FOOL!easy enough
Why is there always such an insistence on one move being linked to one overworld ability in the first place? Is it really THAT impossible for a move like slash or psycho cut to trigger the menu option for cut?
>>57990026The Sevii Islands are horrible, rewire your map design philosophy and get some taste.
>>57996207Finally a good idea.
Genuinely how in the fuck Punch/Kick/Fighting moves don't let you break rocks/move boulders?
>>57996207You can do that, but it cheapens the need to give up a move slot to unlock certain areas on the map. Why bother having a door if you have the key at all times?
>>57996221>Why bother having a door if you have the key at all times? That example really doesn't work here, most of the time you need both the HM and the Badge to use it outside of battle
>>57996207At that point, why not just tie it into typing
>>57996234How would you do Surf + Dive + Waterfall + Whirlpool then
>>57996217That's the thing. It's not even my idea.
I've been hearing people suggest this shit, including on this board if not on this general, for fucking YEARS. Certainly not every day, granted. But it pops up, people go "Wow, yeah! That sounds neat!" and then it fucking dies.
>>57996221>>57996234Because, at least from a personal ideal, HMs aren't about having a key, they're about the journey with the bros.
If we're only demanding the key, simply having the HM unlocked is enough. If we want HMs to have actual meaning as interacting with the party, there's something to be said with demanding certain limitations while allowing variety.
>>57996230It does work, because you're thinking about it the wrong way.
Say you're in a hack with field moves that don't need to be taught. You get Cut with the fourth gym. Now every single cut tree in the second half of the game might as well not be there because all it takes is a single A button press to get past it. You don't need to give up anything for it.
It's less interesting design. Unironically, breakable tools would be more interesting than just being able to pass any obstacle for free.
>>57996234NTA but there are mons like Tauros or Nidoking which can learn Surf despite having nothing to do with water
>>57996242Whirlpool is shit just remove it from the overworld entirely, you can't make it interesting
The rest just tie it all to water types
GameFreak was right in removing HMs
>>57996256I prefer BWs approach of HMs being strictly optional and merely serve to explore
>>57996261I prefer modern games giving you that option without needing to waste a moveslot
>>57993485>>57993501i am surprised that somebody even bothered to remember the ranger DS games considering even Gamefreak forgot about their collective existence
>>57996246I mean in those hacks you need a mon which can use the HM (assuming they didn't change that just to make it a nonfactor) the actual HM and the Badge (if locked behind one, for example you can use any HM from the start in BW)
Still I get your point, maybe HMs are really not that good as a way to interact with your party period
>>57996246i wouldn't exactly call one move slot a meaningful 'cost' personally, especially when half the time it's just to get an item
it's not like you're having to put away one of your team to get past the obstacle to be jumped by a hard encounter that requires all 6 team members, at worst you're bringing a HM slave to a battle that needs like 4 pokemon to deal with
personally my thought is that cut and rock smash obstacles have always been filler past the initial roadblocks stopping you from progressing, strength at least allows for puzzles and surf is mobility but those two barely ever have any actual need to exist that can't easily be covered by some random NPC blocking the way that disappears after you get the badge
they're purely for inconvenience once they've served their original purpose
Is there a Fire Red romhack that makes all the battles doubles & all 386 Pokemon obtainable (without cluttering Kanto) that keeps gen 3's mechanics?
I really like gen 3 doubles. There's probably an Emerald hack out there that does it
>>57996266for fucks sake the one day I'm not awake to make a new thread and of course he snipes it. god you're a piece of shit david.
