All internet jokes used to be way simpler because it was a small niche, and there wasn't a lot that has been done yet. Memes these days have to be complex references and/or covered in at least 3 layers of irony, or are the same meme but in a new dress (good thing vs bad thing etc).
And I understand FULLY it well. I had internet since 2001. The Mudkip meme is what made me discover 4chan in early 2006.
