Hey guys, I’m playing Scarlet and Violet for the first time. Last time I played Pokémon was X and Y for 3DS, and I wasn’t crazy about it. So far Violet is pretty good. Any tips before I get any deeper in?

Complete Arven's path first since that unlocks your 'HM' access for the game, enhancing your exploration and freedom. Nemona's path with the gyms is 2nd priority in order to progress along the game and so that Pokémon continue to obey you. Penny's path is least priority because that mainly just unlocks TM/TR access. Also, try and see as many Pokémon as you can so that the map populates with the identities of the outbreak Pokémon. That will make it easier to hunt whatever you want, including Shiny hunt.

If it's too hard to get TM's, use pokemon home to send some of the pokemon to games like Arceus or sword. Teachable moves from cd's and tutors were easier to learn. This however will only be compatible with a few pokemon. There are compatibility issues that are too convoluted to explain.

Don't shy away from changing up your team often. The days of sticking to a team of 6 is over because of Exp Share.
Keep an eye open for shinies.
Don't skip any dialogue, the story is pretty good this time around.

That's not true, catchrates are different for every Pokémon. It's just that early mons have really high catch rates.

The DLC is pretty good.
It has two parts. The first part can be played right after you start the Treasure Hunt at school, although it also has a high level version if you start it after beating the game. But I think it's intended to be beaten before that.
The second part focuses on double battles, it can get pretty tricky for beginners.

Go and catch Flamigo. There's a Quick Ball on the way to it, sneak up behind it and it should be a 100% catch. You might have to jump backwards up a wall. Feed Flamigo every single Exp Candy you can get your hands on. You've beaten the game.

Yes, it's a game for kids. Why are you trying to pretend that it's challenging by artificially handicapping yourself? You should play through the game efficiently and effectively so you can devote more of your attention to reading the story, admiring the visuals (lmao), and planning out your team for competitive battling (if you're interested in that). There is no challenge in the campaign at all so you might as well blast through it with the optimal team.

What you mean to say is that the campaign is boring, which it is. It's designed to be easily beaten by literal toddlers, but it's mandatory to unlock the game's full set of areas and features. If you want to do things like making viable Pokemon for competition, or catching the latest Mightiest Mark Pokemon, or shiny hunting in Area Zero, you are forced to beat the campaign. There's no option to skip it, so the next best thing is simply to use the tools it gives you to beat it as quickly an easily as possible. If you want a challenge, you're in the wrong franchise.

I really don't understand your approach. I like doing the campaign. I like building a team. I like being underleveled so that some fights actually require thinking to beat. That's the fun part. The story is just a nice extra.

Fighting NPCs with weak and incomplete teams isn't "the whole point of the game". The entire campaign is a glorified tutorial. I've been doing this for over a quarter of a century, I don't need to slowly progress through the campaign and learn about all the different types and moves. Anyone who's ever played a Pokemon game before doesn't need the railroading and the handholding and the absolute lack of anything approaching a challenge. Campaigns are, at this point, a necessary evil and by far the weakest and most boring aspect of a new Pokemon game due to the complete failure to meaningfully innovate or do anything interesting with them. I mindlessly spam A through several hours worth of fights because they STILL don't give you the option to skip it all with one A press. Why can't they just drop you in the world with an all-access pass and let you get on with what you actually want to do?

I would never play any kind of campaign or story mode again if it was made optional. I'd be quite happy if I never fought another Pokemon battle against an NPC.
