Paul's return was one of the few kino moments of the entire M8 arc. He matured in believable and enjoyable way - he changed his priorities and while he's still rather strict and cold, now it's showed more like a behavior of stern teacher that grinds his students because he wants good for them. Also, his side team that he put together just to give Ash a lesson was composed of mons used by champions and it was stated that they were as strong as real deal, showing that he's far above Ash in terms of ability to use Pokemon's potential.

This is reason Ash wasn't allowed to use his reserves in his biggest tournament because that would meant Greninja would have to return to Ash's team which means that the executive will be forced into producing a rematch where his Alain loses to Ash.
