The only reason ANYONE ever cared about the Pokemon anime was to see Ash beat gyms and challenge the league.
You never saw news articles about Dawn winning contests, but every time Ash lost or won a league every normie outlet was talking about it.
Getting rid of Ash was a death sentence!

Twitter has the ability to recommend trending news, but Ash lost the league at least 4 times already before Twitter became as centralized a source as it is, and even then that's just one source

I stopped being invested in the anime around Johto. It became very evident that Ash isn't growing as a character and that the format has become very formulaic and all of the old Kanto-soul has left the building. Nothing since has really gotten your adrenaline pumping, made you cry, and really filled you with wonder like that first season did.

He grown more as a character from OS to DP than characters like Luffy and Goku that are aged but still manchild with less sense of responsibility.

Hack even older Tai from Digimon Tri turned out to be a bigger disappointment than any version of Ash.
