Not like it mattered anyways considering Charizard was his ace for the league anyways. At least Harrison was a good opponent unlike Richie or THUNDERBOLT MEOWTH.

Harrison was an awful battle as well. The only decent part of it was Charizard vs Blaziken, while the entire rest of it is forgettable. I'll go as far as to say the only good league battles were against Tobias and Alain. I want to say Gary, but it made Ash look really bad in retrospect with Charizard having to carry that fight.

Filler hell and it might be the main reason I'm not as passionate about Pokemon as I was while the first season was airing.
I didn't have the games because financial problems + silent generation dad but I loved Pokemon so much I made a CYOA in a notebook back then. None of that after the hundredth stop to delay the next gym battle for another episode.

Pokefags not having a say over which Pokemon can or cannot be in the games is a good thing.
If they did, the dex cut that Pokefags cry over would be weaponized against the Chikorita line and other deemed "undesirables" without any self awareness or irony.

Harbinger of the formulaic slog the anime would become post-OS. The typical episode structure of a Johto episode is fundamentally the same as an episode from Hoenn or Kalos, just with the original characters. I watched it again in my early 20s and was surprised at just how much worse it was than I remembered it being. No wonder Pokemania died out when it did

Johto League Champions is not any better. 20 episodes between Whitney and Morty and nothing fucking happens in them, expect for Brock getting cucked like 3 times and Ash winning a sun stone that he then uses in a random sunkern.

I was kinda counting all the Johto episodes together, but yeah. Thinking back I think it was at some point during Johto that I stopped religiously getting up at 8am or whenever it was on to watch the show, and watching it again I can see why kid me lost interest.

To be fair, the games have extremely little to work with. Every time Ash finally made it to a city they always did a bunch of episodes there, and you can tell the writers were really happy to actually have some material to work with and make episodes about.
The Goldenrod Radio episode is probably the best in the entire Johto arc.

Honestly most of Ash's teams are incredibly dogshit - not even like bad gameplay-wise but just the most unappealing early route dogshit you could think of.
His Hoenn team is just as bad except for Glalie.
Kalos and Journeys were his only good teams, though even then I'm not a big fan of how Journeys was all Kantomons except Lucario.

Hoenn and Sinnh had contests to spend the time, Unova had perfect pacing until after the league with shitty Declore island filler arc, and Kalos dragged until XYZ and was hard-carried by sakuga. Kanto knew it didn't have shit to go on from the games alone, so they sometimes went full original, and the show was much better for that. They lost that freedom when Pokemon went mainstream.
