Which is equally dumb. This isn't the 90's why the hell would any game have you ride your companion without a seamless transition? The only way to have mounts without violating the patent would be to make you open a menu and select a different one/form instead of the terrain or player's actions in the overworld triggering it.

Because Game Freak doesn't want to dare to inconvenience you in any way after people bitched about HMs for years, so now you're not even expected to catch a flying type pokemon to ride it they just give you a random one and it stops things from looking awkward with some of the smaller birds
