My only guess that leads them not bullshitting themselves is that they watched it enough that the artstyle grew on them to the point that they actually do like it. If not that though, they're probably lying.

The current state of the Pokemon anime is so fascinating to me.
For years fans had been clamoring for the anime to stick closer to the story of the games, it was clear most people only really liked the League plotline and not any of the extraneous shit that got added, and they begged the staff to get rid of Ash and have him replaced with the game characters.
So they release the final Ash season which is probably the furthest deviation from the games we'd ever gotten up to that point, and now the new Liko season is basically OC central with absolutely no correlation with SV beyond a few characters and the Pokemon they use.
They took one step forward and like 50 steps back.

nearly everything in gen7 was unironically the result of gamefreak shitting their pants due to yokai watch's success lighting a fire under their asses, the anime is no exception so it was made much more goofy/cartoony to compete
