Honestly I kinda like it.
Kalos is a very spectacle-focused region both for meta and in-lore reasons, both of which end up complementing each other, so the first impression of the game being a showcase route for the fancy new 3D graphics is fine I think.
Plus let's not act like it's anything new for Pokemon.

This.
It was just to showcase the new 3d graphics, just like they did with skyarrow bridge

Well like was pointed out above you both are meant to be showcase routes.
Also some Pokemon games liked to have some connective tissue at the start of each game (in Hoenn you're moving in from Johto, in Sinnoh you're investigating the Red Gyarados incident) so I wouldn't be surprised if it was meant as a sorta "ok time for Unova to pass the torch" moment.

Skyarrow bridge also mimics the New York City skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge which is analogous as to where the player is coming from in the first game (except there's trees and shit instead of just shit)

yeah if you take out the world building, the aesthetics, the timing, the wonder, and the graphics, these are the same

Yet people are so quick to remove Kalos Route 1 from its context as well.
It's the first 3D game, we'd never seen environments this detailed before nor had we ever had character models this intricate and this close to the screen.
Even when taking the rest of the game into account this is probably the best look you'll get at your trainer during regular gameplay.
I'm not saying it's spectacular but like it's fine, it's not like Kalos is exactly lacking in routes considering it's got like 25 in total or whatever it is - "wasting" one like this is barely a factor.

Not even really true, the BW example is very close to the daycare early in the game, and is an upgrade over the long road outside the daycare because you can hold one direction for a while but still less good than the Battle Subway later in the game where you just hold one direction forever. It's an interesting and probably unintentional mechanical progression, but these incidental things sometimes make a game better.

Given how many routes they waste on gimmicks that don't really work or aesthetic design without much mechanical depth I'd argue one that's literally nothing and just separates two towns that could have been one it's arguably a waste.

Actually, going back to Skyarrow Bridge and the choice to let you hold one direction while the camera changes, it reminds me of tank controls in older video games which isn't always the best thing but has uses for exactly what it's used for. On the other hand Lumiose reminds me of some of the worse free cameras with normal movement, I've mentioned DK64's complete lack of motion easing a lot but the game also just snaps the cameras weirdly a lot and it's hard to just go in a direction sometimes. Like when you transition out of certain entry ways it has one camera angle but then immediately snaps to a different one and if you're already holding the direction you thought you wanted to go you'll probably just go back in the entrance again. It's not like they couldn't do it good, on the N64 the Banjo games and OoT are just fine, and on the 3DS OoT is just fine. It just feels like they wanted to do it without any of the finesse they needed. It's not a surprise they didn't try it again until SS, when they had a new system and some modicum of time with the buffer of Let's Go.

The route count in these games is totally arbitrary.
Say you remove Route 1 from X and Y and combine the two starting towns, what does that accomplish? It's not like it opens up a new route slot, it literally just means the game has 21 routes instead of 22.
It's also funny how you never see this kind of energy levied against Hoenn having like 3 routes dedicated to the current puzzle for the Regi chamber.
