I went and analyzed the first Saturday of June since 2015 (Except 2018 because that's when the beta leak happened and would mess with my results).
This is the percentage of gooner threads created on those days compared to other threads. Every thread that was targeted or baiting sexual subject matter towards a character whether female, male or Pokemon was considered 'gooner'. Deleted threads were excluded.
It starts at ~2% in 2015 and peaks at ~19% today. However, I don't think this gives us the full picture as the catalog right now has a lot more gooner threads than that right now. I believe that's because gooners are more assertive towards keeping their threads alive vs. others. I'll have to consider different metrics to see what the real difference is. As anon said, if archive.org didn't blacklist 4chan we'd have a clearer picture.
At least this proves that there are way more gooner threads being made daily than in 2015 and that it wasn't 'always like this'.

I went into a few different threads over the years and the older they were, the more likely actual conversations occurred with less derailing into politics or gooning.

The number of threads created daily were first rising but have been dropping over the last few years while the amount of goon threads have been slowly rising at the same time. So while it's not a flood, its increasing but seems much bigger than it is because it takes up a much bigger percent of the total posters daily.

The other thing to control for is that, as time passes, there will be more and more potential waifus/husbandos. Suppose in Gen 10 we get a FeMC, lets call her Anna. She'll probably bring in new fans. Of course it does. The games are easy to beat and can be done with ease. People can prattle on about teams and setups all they want but we all know everybody basically has their own way of completing the game. You have people even doing challenge runs for fun. But all of this, pointless. There is more to Pokemon than games. You can even do favorite pokemon threads and those die out too because what is there to a pokemon? They say their name and do attacks and that's it. People like discussing characters because they talk, can be relatable, and have more interesting things about them. People coming to /vp/ looking for a serious discussion are setting themselves up for failure. Can't speak for earlier but I came around in 2014 and I do distinctly remember that I stopped using /vp/ for a while in 2015 because the board was just /e/ posting. It's what the board settles into in the lull between games.
Not that the overall quality wasn't higher back then, can't argue that. People actually liked the series, so naturally there was more interest in posting here and generally more enthusiasm to go around. Board culture like showderp, mspaint threads, not-questy, etc were active, competitive discussion was alive and well, they were still releasing spinoffs so you had that to talk about too
These days there's not a lot to be excited for, so there's not much of a reason to stick around. Leaves you with only the most ultra of autists to populate the board.
I still root for /vp/ in 4cc though. It's still the homeboard in my heart
