Most of that "mentality" was also invented by the dub. In the JP version Mewtwo's plan was apparently just to lure in a bunch of trainers with strong Pokémon, clone them to create a family for himself, then erase the trainers' memories of all this and go to live in seclusion.

He wasn't summoning a storm to destroy the world, just to keep anyone from leaving his island until he was done. He also never commanded the cloned Pokémon to attack anyone, they just escaped and went on a rampage after Ash/Satoshi broke the cloning machine.

After saying I should watch it I immediately went to find a copy of it.

Holy shit they changed almost everything! It's barely the same movie. And I honestly liked the Japanese soundtrack way way more. Much less music, a lot more silent moments where the only sound is the action happening on screen, and I liked the original anime music way more than the what the dub replaced it with - pop music that does nothing but show the movie's age whenever you watch it.

So so many lines where I was just like "why the fuck did they change that! They made everyone dumber!"

Yeah I remember the same feeling when I found out too.

The scene where they were dueling on top of a glass building (skylight? idk) makes so much more sense though. In the dub, there was a glowing barrier under them. Losing would make the glass break, and they'd fall onto the barrier and be sent to the shadow realm.

In the original Japanese version, the glass would break and they'd just fucking fall several stories to their deaths. Beautiful.
