Why are there starters, you should be able to pick any pokemon you want at the beginning and have it start at lvl 5

I played a run of HGSS with Dialga and Palkia and Giratina as my starters by having Arceus create them and trading them over.

I always pick Calyrex Shadow Rider then complain the game is too easy. What happened to GameFreak?
