I hope this mechanic returns for the next gen and gets refined. One thing I'd like is the ability to challenge trainers as the Pokemon. They could get unique dialogue thinking it's a wild Pokemon, for example.

Yeah, there's a surprising amount of soul put into this. Definitely my favorite acticity in Gen 9, just checking how the 'mons behave. What I want adsed is the option to actually go up with the 'flying Mons, because when you fall to the ground I think that's it unless you reset it.

Also one time I walked far away and saw a shiny Pokémon. There was no way to catch it because it despawns when you're far away, that was total bullshit.

It's certainly coming back next gen. A lot of minor features in a gen are usually previews for what's coming up in the next gen (Gen 6 had the rideable Skiddo, Gen 7 gave us riding Pokemon).
