For visibility in the black and white era iirc. Characters were usually black, like Mickey Mouse for example, so drawing gloves made it easier to see the hands against their bodies. Carried over into stuff like Mario and Sonic for similar reasons, sprites were small so dividing their bodies into clearly distinguishable colors made it easier to see their hands and arms.
