I like Kanto and Johto. I don't feel as strongly toward Hoenn but it has a pleasantly surprising number of excellent designs. I don't like most of Sinnoh or Unova but Kalos had a lot of hits fit into a small dex. Alola onward has been a mix.

I think it's because most people agree that Pokemon hasn't quite been as good since Gen 6, so the first five gens are therefore remembered fondly.
Out of the first five gens, Gen 5 is still the most controversial. People who like Gen 5 are extremely vocal about it, but people who dislike Gen 5 are extremely vocal and obnoxious about it
Kanto pandering has been a problem for years and Johto has a strong association with Kanto so it gets flack by association. Sinnoh remakes are too recent (<5 yrs ago) so the hype has quieted down. That leaves Hoenn. People either like it or are ambivalent towards it.

As a late millennial who grew up on Gen III -- Gen IV and also came away from it thinking Platinum was my favorite and arguable best game, but have now since changed my mind to Emerald, it's because DPPt is a continuation of RSE with a lot of changes which are superficially improvements, exactly like with GSC over RBY, but turn out upon closer inspection to be a bevvy of sidegrades and downgrades that don't make it as great as a child leads themselves to believe upon retrospection. It was understandable at the time, but now if you've given it enough thought in maturity, you realize Platinum is great but not as good.

Pokemania was dead at the time (compare Crystal sales to sales of Gold and Silver) and Gen 3 cut off backwards compatibility with Gen 2. That left a sour taste in people's mouth. Nowadays people complain about too much water and day-night cycle, but the lack of backwards compatibility was the main issue people had with the games at the time.
Though it's true that RS is much more fun to replay than DP and a lot of it has to do with the DP dex being so terrible, but Platinum improves the Dex and the story considerably, so I can see why some people might prefer Platinum to Emerald. HGSS are easily superior remakes to FRLG, which doesn't let you use Pokemon outside of the original 151 (not even Crobat and Blissey) until the postgame. Colosseum and XD are better than Battle Revolution but they're technically spinoffs.

I'm 32 - 33 in september - and I grew up with pokemania. I can safely say Gen 1 is steaming dogshit, gen 2 isn't much better, and gen 3 - when I first played it when I was like 10-11 (ruby version) - was so shit I didn't even bother finishing it until later when I emulated Emerald. Gen 4 brought me back in and HGSS are what I consider basically the perfect pokemon games, or as close as this shitty franchise can get, then gen 5 killed my interest in pokemon so bad I didn't ever buy a 3ds and only played Y via emulation in 2018, and even then I found it incredibly boring and full of dumb decisions (why am I given a charmander 5 minutes in, that made me not use my actual starter in favor of charizard + Gardevoir, why is mewtwo here, what the fuck is the deal with zygarde), and I dropped Ultra Sun about 2 hours in after a ton of cutscenes and gen 1 shitmons being the majority of the mons available at that point. I haven't played SwSH or SV or LGPE, and I got frustrated with PLA because it's a pain in the ass to 100%.

Not a good comparison. Crystal to Yellow is better. They were repeats that relied on the strengths of their gimmicks. Yellow was anime-focused and let you get all the starters. HGSS has more content than GSC, including a full battle frontier as well as a safari zone which fixes the issues you fags whine about with the Gen 2 mons not being available before the postgame while still including all of the GSC content and even adding new events including canonizing that Silver is Giovanni's son and adding the expanded movepools from gen 4 + the physical/special split as well as entirely new E4 rematches, a harder red fight, and all the missing legendaries from Gen 2.

Also, Gen 1 is a buggy unfinished mess and Gen 2 is just barely better, plus gen 2 has shallow as fuck movepools and none of the QoL improvements from gen 4's remakes like the running shoe toggle.

And for the record, I didn't play HGSS until after I'd played BW/BW2 (I pirated the latter in japanese and used a fanmade english patch to play it pre-release btw).

Gen 1 is good throughout. The only questionable part is Brock in Yellow. Gen 2 sucks after you reach Ecruteak.

Gen 4 is a mechanical improvement but in every other aspect (pokemon designs, atmosphere, world structure, plot) gen 3 is by far superior. And for most people these things outweigh the lack of physical/special split. I think the biggest issue is just how ugly and unlikable the Sinnoh pokemon are, nobody has any emotional attachment to those abominations.
