this question implies I have my current intelligence and skills so I would use my expertise to work an actual job for a few months and earn what I imagine would be a much higher salary than the kids running around defeating random people and getting their pocket change. In my free time I would train my ratata. With my money I would buy a lot of resources, especially XP candy if it was available but since this seems like a hardcore world I imagine it wouldn't be very easy to get. Resources would then be in the form of potions, pokedolls, pokeballs, etc to be able to heal up and escape fights if needed. When I felt I was ready I would try to catch a pokemon that was marginally higher level than my ratata and make sure that it was of some non-normal type. I might catch a few of the same type just so I have backups in case one faints, I can afford the pokeballs, I have a salary after all. I would then search for pokemon with a type weakness to my newly catched ones and are also marginally higher level and then catch many of that type. I would then repeat this process of catching marginally higher level pokemon of rotating type weakness so I always have an advantage until I had high level pokemon with optimal stats and nature that would be worth investing into. Then I'd try to beat gyms and catch legendaries and get a hot girl to slob on my knob i guess

Ok so my options are be a route 1 goon and get my ass battered by actual trainers or I can go all natural forage for apircorns and have my Rattata mine for tumblestones, spend days learning how to craft my own pokeballs like Kurt and making my own medicinal herbs. I'm not gonna be some chump paying for shit I can probably get or make for free

Medicinal herbs would probably be fine, but with OP's world being a lot more realistic I think it's safe to assume that homemade pokeballs would be illegal because they aren't IDed and registered with the PC system, which is how your movements and activities get tracked just in case you try to send your tyranitar out to raid a town or god forbid try to withdraw 7 pokemon at once (which is so that you can't have a full army on you)
