Game does a terrible job at trying to paint him in any good light. He just seems like a lunatic when I feel like they could have made him a little more sympathetic. I imagine the manga (currently on XY) does a better job with him. He has an admirable goal. Y'know, save his region from a cataclysmic event that'll happen. I know it'll happen in like 1000 years and you could easily put it off a day, a couple of months, hell maybe even a couple of centuries. But there is something admirable about him trying to solve that issue now instead of leaving it for some shumuck a hundred years from now.

Trauma that is explained only in ancillary media and not in the actual fucking video game. Like, it's explained in the game that he used to be a coal miner, and the anime said his dad died in a coal mine, plus the DLC has his brother trying to solve a similar problem in a less fucking retarded way. So they're painting a picture that he desperately wants to prevent any future problems immediately, but in doing so picks the worst possible time because Leon kept blowing him off so he picked the only time Leon would publicly have to do anything about it. Basically everyone has problems and is kinda retarded but at least Peony's problems and retardation are awesome.

Personally, I feel Rose suffers from giving him the wrong character flaws for the actions he takes. There is very little to show he is anything more than a kind man who is trying to do his best. He doesn't get angry about his plans being interrupted or challenged, he's rather humble in defeat, and he isn't even impatient like you would expect for a man who couldn't wait one more day. Hell, he's beloved for making the region a better place and he gives sports scholarships to orphans for God's sake. The only explanation for his actions are that he snapped somehow, but he remains composed in the face of everything.

Actually, I just had a theory. He is constantly shown being so busy and beloved that he never gets to relax. I genuinely think he might have just asked himself one day "What is a way I can tank my reputation and be stripped of my responsibilities, while also doing something good for the region?" By interrupting the biggest event of the year and unleashing a dangerous polemon that Leon will surely capture and enrich Galar with. Things didn't go completely to plan, but now he's got some peace and quiet while relaxing in a no doubt cushy prison cell. He won.

My personal theory is that originally doomsday was going to be imminent but then corporate got involved and said that the one guy who legitimately cares about the environment being considered evil would be bad PR so they demanded it be changed to doomsday being 1000 years away that way Rose is just a lunatic.

This would have actually been interesting. They also could have gone the direction of saying the problem won't be a 1000 years but that day would be the only day they can put the plan to avert that disaster into action which would explain why he couldn't at least wait for the league to be over.

Rose was kind of kino as a whole, but it just don't exist in main story.

So many people think Gamefreak fucked up by putting the doomsday 1000 years into the future when the whole point is Rose is deranged. His huge ego demands he fix every problem so he can be beloved by Galar centuries into the future. He specifically does it during the League to maximize the spectacle.
