It's not about Geller, Jews, or anything else anons said above. Alakazam was sidelined for the same reason Jynx had her colour changed. Which is the same reason why Beauty, Sage, Swimmer and Medium had their sprites changed in Gen 2. Which coincidentally is the same reason Game Corner was removed. Alakazam isn't really a good way to sell games and toys for kids in the West (and by that I mean Americans ruining everything for everyone else). American mums don't want their children playing with yellow Baphomet.

The "evil" or "villainous" type in Gen 1 was poison. All poison Pokemon are aggressive bugs, sentient weeds or straight up toxic waste. Rocket grunts use mostly Poison types, the "evil" Umbreon was Poison until they made Dark types. All poison moves are just spreading pollution and harm, and they're destroyed by the mind -- psychic types.
