Yes. Venusaur, Pidgeot, Raticate, Butterfree, Pikachu, and the last one I would switch out for different things to level them up and evolve them for the pokedex. One of the last mons to fill this role was Persian.

Not mine. I taught my Venusaur cut, my Pidgeot fly, my Pikachu flash... I guess I had to have a surf user of some kind. But yeah, I leveled all my pokemon evenly too.

I never beat the Elite 4.

An insanely overeleveld Blastoise, Lapras, maybe Raticate in my first Blue run in 2000.
Accidentally deleted the savefile a few months later and took the chance to add Omastar and Mewtwo in my second run (I failed to catch the big cat boi the first time because I tossed the Master Ball as soon as I got it).

Half of them. When playing RPG, there are those who overlevel certain characters and fuck the rest of the party and the those who never let one character be two levels ahead of the rest.
Pokรฉmon is not an exception.

Pretty much this.

I just remember picking Squirtle the first time I played Blue, and I definitely had it and Fearow the first time I beat it. Maybe Arcanine, maybe Zappos? My first Silver file I picked Cyndaquil and I remember nothing else. Pretty sure I used whatever legendary dog I caught too.

But I can tell you EXACTLY my first ever team of level 100s down to the nicknames from my first time playing Sapphire, because I still have them all in my Ultra Sun cart.

My first full team was in Pearl when I was 14
>Torterra
>Luxray
>Floatzel
>Gastrodon
>Staraptor
>Weavile

My first game was yellow when I was 6
I had no full team and don't even remember how I beat the game.
Same for Silver, I only remember I had the Red Gyarados.
In Ruby I had a lv80 Gyarados
In Leaf Green I mainly beat the game with a Blastoise, that I then raised to lv100 with the vs seeker on Sevii islands
In Emerald I beat the game with Swampert, Raichu and Ninetales (a team that I then used in the Battle Frontier had managed to get the Dome symbols with)

My hall of fame has long been rendered unusable by missingno and I tended to catch alot of random stuff and swap pokemon in and out so there's no telling exactly how my very first E4 win was comprised, but pic related is all of the distinct mainstays I remember. The mewtwo I scammed off another kid in exchange for a meowth, the mew was caught on route 1 via gameshark, and surprisingly through some miracle the Chansey was caught completely legit. Honorable mention to the rental Jolteon in pokemon stadium who I would have definitely slapped onto the team if there was a way to get him on there.(I have no idea what happened to the gift Eevee. I have no recollection of getting it and when I learned about it years later and went to check it was already given.)

Soul. Having the HMs spread through your team is how they were intended to be used. That's why there's 5 of them and they're mainly learnable by different types of pokemon. You're meant to assemble a team for adventure and exploration, not just battle.

Ditching HMs and turning them into random call ins or a magic bike so you can hyperfocus on battle is souless.

I would like if they instead added more field uses for moves that aren't just complicated doorkeys(e.g. secretpower, headbutt, sweet scent) especially now that they've conceded to allow the player to change their moves whenever they want. They've kinda redundantly solved the annoyance of HMs and I kinda agree it should be walked back.

But like, gamefreak simply isn't going to go through the effort to do all that. In fact they're more likely to specifically remove those moves so nobody asks for it lmao

I was 5 or 6 when I got Red version and I don't think I ever even figured out the PC so my team was something like Blastoise, Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Geodude, and Machop

I distinctly remember that when my starter was KOd I'd have to just hopelessly cycle through the remaining trashmons until I lost and I don't think I even thought there was anything wrong with this because of course Blastoise was stronger, he's the best and coolest Pokรฉmon ever so it just makes sense my other ones suck

it's not unreasonable to do that in gen 1 or 5 (maybe 6 too? idk i never played it) but in most generations there's way too many of them. if you could delete them like any other move it'd be fine, why are they so special that you can't delete em without the guy anyway (or at all in gen 1)? it's not like you can trade away your hms and get stuck

Charizard, Nidoqueen, Omastar, Articuno, Golbat.
Charizard had Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Fire Spin, and Mega Punch.
Nidoqueen had Earthquake, Thunderbolt, Strength, and Surf.
Omastar had Surf, Hydro Pump, Blizzard, and I forget the last slot.
Articuno had Fly, Ice Beam, Bubblebeam, and I want to say Rest.
Golbat had, I think, Confuse Ray, Mega Drain, Hyper Beam, and I think Bite.

The Golbat was from the cinnibar island glitch. My cousin showed me how to do it, I forgot how he did it, but the level, like, 140 golbat I caught (that delevelled to 100 of course), I was convinced was special. It was my secret weapon for all battles (I spammed confuse + flinch)
Articuno was the only one of the birds I caught, because it didn't occur to me to save first, and the other ones all died.
Iirc, Nidoqueen was super underlevelled until after I had beaten the game. I just kinda stopped using it for some reason.

When I first played Red when I was 6, I picked Bulbasaur because Oak in the game manual said it was the easiest one. When I only had Leech Seed and not Vine Whip by Brock, I reset my game and picked Squirtle because I wanted a Super Effective attacking move. My team was even levels at first. I was trying so hard. When the levels tied I would sort them by HP least to greatest. Eventually though it got to be too annoying to keep them even. I remember the Hitmonchan a picked being too weak for the Elite Four to do serious damage but it also wasn't going down either for a while. My fossil choice was the Helix Fossil because I got confused. I really wanted the Dome Fossil but for some reason I thought they were opposite. I don't remember my full final team, because I beat the game and then restarted it to do the Mew glitch and before I could do so my neighbor traded me his Lv 100 Mew which I used to beat the game again. The disobedience was really bad. I probably didn't use Lapras due to it's low level and I didn't have any legendaries going into the Elite Four. I likely did try to use Aerodactyl but didn't train it up due to how late you get it.

I'm the opposite. I didn't nickname anything except when it didn't evolve and then I would nickname it whatever it's original name was because I didn't like ALL CAPS, thinking of pokemon species names as proper names an therefore wanting only the first letter to be capitalized.

I was 6 in 2001 when i got Silver, but I had good reading comprehension. I loved the surf animation.

Feraligatr was the HM slave unfortunately. CUT SURF WATERFALL WHIRLPOOL. I remember him having ice punch most of the game and being sad that the game forced me to load him up with shitty environmental moves. I had him with me at all times tho.
threw the masterball at Suicune immidiately. SURF AURORABEAM whatevr else. Needed a kid at a baseball game to help me catch Lugia since I had no masterball. It knew Fly and Surf and AEROBLAST which was the hypest move ever

Ampharos and Weepinbell tagged along the whole game not really doing much. I caught Graveler moments before challenging the elite 4 simply because he was in victory road and I needed a 6th man. He self-destructed for at least one epic win

sometimes I wonder if I am deeply autistic for remembering all of this. I love PKMN.

Technically it was just a wartortle.
I was like 3-4 when I played Blue and my older brother told me to use squirtle because it was the best one, so I did. I would then proceed to skip every wild and trainer battle that I could so I would end up too underleveled by the time I got to Surge, then I'd just reset and do it again repeatedly.
The first time I actually beat one of the games though was in FRLG, I just used venusaur and pidgeot. Not sure what I had in the rest of the party but I think I had a ponyta. I was probably 5 so I don't remember.

Yeah, as I was typing that out it made me realize that HMs in gen 1 had a secondary purpose of forcing team diversity. You pretty much had to have a diverse team to effectively travel the whole map. From a design perspective HMs were pretty good initially.

But the issue with HM moves is they were by and large underpowered or redundant.
You need two, sometimes three water HMs on your team? You probably only have one water Pokemon and other than Surf it's only getting one other move now.
Why is Flash 75 accuracy when something like Sand Attack is 100? Why was cut 30BP for decades and then only buffed to 50? Why did they not buff Rock Smash when they made it a mandatory HM in Gen 3? This isn't even a complaint of "every move should one shot the opponent" but more like, you aren't killing anything with fucking Rock Smash, ever. Did these moves need to be less powerful than fucking Tackle?

Also, depends on the game, as the series goes on there's so many useful moves you can teach a Pokemon, it just feels lame to be stuck with an HM. Even if you never use all four moves on your mon, it just doesn't feel good to have let a move go because you can't delete something worse.

Or just make the easy choice to pick a cute electric dog.

>Snorlax.
I remember replacing Clefable with him cause Clefable is a female pokemon and only male pokemons like Snorlax should learn HM strength lol.

>Ninetails.

Bulbasaur was definitely my very first Pokemon, and kept it on my time all the way through the game. Omanyte was a permanent member of the team after reviving it. Zapdos, not necessarily because it was a legendary, but I just thought it was a really cool design. That's all I remember...

Honestly, I want to know how many people wasted their first Master Ball. I wasted my first (legitimate) Master Ball on a Bouffalant, thinking I'd get more later.

Vaguely
I remember having an overleveled charizard and vaporeon.
I'm like 95% sure I had a pigeot.
I think there was something with thunderbolt, maybe a raichu or something.
Not clue on the other two.

I think I used my first Master Ball on one of the legendary birds in Blue. Not quite a waste, I suppose, but that meant having to catch Mewtwo will an Ultra Ball...

Huh, not a terrible use. Better than mine!
Sucks too because my perception of master balls was warped by my cousin cheating in her game, which was my first taste of late-game Pokemon lol

I had a level 100 Typhlosion with Cut, Return, Strength, and Flame Wheel. I think I lost to Whitney the first time. I also used Lugia in my team, but I can't remember anything else I might have used. It was probably occasional HM slaves, I was 6. My file died like 2 years though. I don't know what it was about my battery, but it died fairly quickly while my brother's lasted at least 10 years (he's never checked to see if it died). I even replaced it, and it died again a couple years after.

Raichu
Hypno
Nidoking
Moltres
Victreebel
Blastoise

Of course Hypno was immediately "retired" after I got Mewtwo.

Replacing that battery is how I eventually got into soldering.

Do you mean your cousin took advantage of a glitch/used a cheat device for unlimited master balls?
