If you got to direct a Pokémon game and could do anything with it as long as it's rated E for everyone, what would you do?

I would gut out most of the story that isn't the player's own, outside of a couple of bad guys causing trouble. The player's journey IS the story.

Fill the game with as much content as possible, develop it all to a satisfactory level. Make it a completionist's worst wet nightmare. Contests, Battle Frontier, Amie, Underground (or some equivalent), player housing, Following Pokemon, Safari Zone, Pokewalker support, some sort of Join Avenue/Festival Plaza equivalent, etc. Pack the game full. 8 Gyms, E4, the Champion, all with rematches. Endgame superbosses hidden away in corners of the world. Legendaries only have snippets of lore to follow, you gotta really seek them out in hidden places.

Make every route as large and complex as Route 23 in BW2 or Mt Coronet. Make it an actual trial to travel between towns. Give them distance. No open world, we're going back to tile-based, dungeon crawler-inspired dungeon design.

Optional EXP Share, Friendship and Affection are two stats again. EXP on Catch optional. Bring Set Mode back. Allow player's to toggle lots of shit.
