I actually think the post-Kalos dexes are better than the II-VI dexes.

I liked the Gen 8 dex, with 7 and 9 there were only a handful of 'regular' Pokemon I liked but they did have cool 'higher end' Pokemon (to lump UBs, Legends, Mythicals, and Paradoxes together).

Pre-Johto dex >>>>>>> all. Nothing can beat the magic of the original 151. The Pokemania craze started with it and ended right after a new dex was added. They deserve every bit of shilling they get.

I would rank Alola's dex up with the first 4 as among the best (can't say the same about the Alola games sadly). but Galar and Paldea dexes are abysmally bad

Absolutely. In the first couple of gens you can pretty easily tell that a lot of Pokemon only really exist to fill a quota (we even have direct confirmation of this for Basculin) but everything feels very purposeful in the newer gens.
