Could anyone who is geeky enough to try and come up with an answer or explanation be it real or a headcanon explain something for me.. Why is Cloyster part ice type?

I never understand it. I get other Pokemon being Ice type. Dewgong swims in cold waters of the North. Mamoswine based on extinct mammoths that lived in frozen tundras. But why is Cloyster an ice type? It's just a large clam or oyster and they don't live in cold waters. So why?

Same reason arcanine is a fire type. Sometimes a pokemon just is the type it is. It's found in the Seafoam Islands where several other ice types were found too.

OOG, it might be a food joke, since people would most frequently encounter bivalves on ice to keep them fresh.
It might also just be a game design consideration, if Gen 1 was thought to need more Ice-types to fill out the roster.
Those would be my two guesses.
In-universe I'm not sure an explanation is really needed. Why is Cyndaquil a fire-type? Why is Pikachu electric? They're animals with elemental powers. Cloyster is a clam with ice and water powers

As steel didnt exist yet, the hardness of the ice was the hardest thing they had. Plus, it fits with the water theme.

It's true pearls aren't rocks (but can be considered gemstones). Ironically it's ice that is considered a rock by geologists.

...not sure where that leaves this debate...

I'm looking at it through a gameplay perspective more than anything (because I think in-universe it doesn't need to be deeper than, like, "it's found in cold places" as other anons said), so:

1. To add more mons to the Ice type, because in Gen 1 there weren't that many (but it wasn't exactly presented as a "unique" type like Dragon or Ghost were at the time, where the typing's limited to only one line)
2. Just fitting the pattern of certain stone evolutions/evolutions in general gaining a type upon evolving: think like Poliwrath becoming Water/Fighting, Starmie becoming Water/Psychic, etc. It changes from pure Water upon evolution so that it feels more like its own unique mon and not just Big Shellder

I honestly think it was just to fill a slot with Pokรฉmon Ice during G1.

If you want to force a biological response, there are certain species that live in icy waters; in fact, oyster/clams they're the reason walruses evolved their tusks, which they use as beaks to tear them off rocks or dig them up from the seafloor.

Because of the shell. Same reason Lapras is an Ice type. Cloyster is a defensive Water type and Ice is supposed to be the defensive type.
