Well, if the Pokéworld was as dystopian as ours, Ruby and Sapphire (and probably most other dexholders as well) would sooner or later fall into one rabbit hole or another.

Take the tranny pipeline as an example. Given how they're initially portrayed as naive (Sapph) and selfconfident (Ruby), you only need bad actors persuading them how transitioning would solve all their problems. As much as I love Sapphire, I'm not sure I could deal with it if she had zippertits, a frog voice, infected stitches, a beard, osteoporosis and PCOS all at once, or god forbid a fake dick made of arm skin. Most of them besides Sapphire are male. The RS arc implies its ideal version of a man, or at least the best potential version of Ruby, is a "gentleman". As in a male who has integrated his feminine side (within responsible limits) and isn't an insecure bitch about it. Note the difference in connotations between the word "gentleman" and the words that westoids/fujoshits like throwing around to describe Ruby like "femboy" or "twink", it's an interesting reflection of culture. In RS the idea of a gentleman is embodied most by Juan and to a lesser extent Wallace. Wallace is just older Ruby without the shit selfish personality (before ORAS, RSE Wallace dressed respectably and not like a fag, and Pokespe Wallace is canonically straight). Juan is an even older Ruby except he's transcended the material plane and become a fancily dressed wise magic wizard. For an extra parallel in Japanese, Ruby likes using English words, and Juan sometimes drops Spanish words, which might be why Ruby basically calls him grandpa within 5 minutes of meeting him.

Both Wallace and Juan's roles were to show Ruby how gentlemen can reach the highest most respected roles in their society (gym leaders/champion) and even further beyond, that Ruby doesn't have to be some 7 foot roided out WWE bodybuilder just to be male, and that his feminine interests don't doom him to being a fag either. He just had to grow up and be responsible. A big part of this is not abandoning Sapphire (his "wife") which Wallace/Juan continually remind Ruby about.

It's interesting how Ruby switching from self obsession to caring about someone else, instantly flips his demeanor from immature to charming. At least to Sapphire anyway. But she's also just dumb and has low standards since she's not used to compliments.

Either way this is cute because you'd think a tarzan girl either wouldn't want/need or even "deserve" to be treated with chivalry, or to get flirted with, but Sapphire actually does like it for the most part. Highlights how much of the tarzan shit was a traumatic defense mechanism and not some "born this way" thing, how malleable personality can be and how she's still a girl in the end. Despite the protection, there could be still a slim risk, if she gets in touch with bad folks. It's not about being constantly bombarded with propaganda, but having just the idea and concept of changing your sex seeded into your mind. With how in RS the team that you don't encounter is just there to fight the bad guys a few times, I've always thought it could be interesting if the protagonist teamed up with them.
For example, you're playing sapphire. Team aqua appear to rob the Devon guy, captain Stern, Cozmo etc. - they're actually being villains. Magma is only encountered in Meteor Falls and Mount Chimney, where they point out how Aqua is stupid and fight against them. Maybe it was because I wasn't very good at English yet when I first played the game, but I remember getting the impression that Magma were good guys.
Bonus points if it's like in the manga, with both May and Brendan encountering the villains, but it's mostly one of them having run-ins with one of the teams and the other having run-ins with the other, and as a result they both colaborate with the teams they think are just trying to stop the actual bad guys.
And then maybe they encounter each other and battle, and the villains use that to ditch them and go for the legendaries, and then the protags realise they've been had and have to work together to stop them. Could have a cool friendship > estrangement > opposition > friendship arc.

In the manga this plays out the most with the Hoenn gym leaders, which actually leads to extremely stupid infighting for a bit as half of them end up thinking Team Magma are the good guys while the other half thinks Team Aqua are the good guys. Ruby and Sapphire themselves only face Team Magma/Aqua respectively but they never end up siding with either team (at least not based on the teams' values) with Sapphire opposing ecoterrorists on principle, but Ruby just being ambivalent to it all because he just moved here and doesn't care. Both of them are more upset about the parts where Aqua/Magma members keep torturing random people well Ruby used to be upset about it but then RS writing goes full retard by the end and seemingly reverses his position on that

Flannery fits this whole idea the most because when Team Aqua comes to her town to shut down Mt Chimney, it's the Magma admin Tabitha who comes to help her save the volcano. Between that and them both being fire type trainers, she listens to his Team Magma shill speech and develops a crush on him.

But the whole ideological conflict just comes off as retarded when it's a bunch of grown adults saying shit like "I like water so Team Aqua's idea of more water is le good". It would make more sense if the 10 year old protagonists are the ones coming to those dumb types of conclusions when picking a side. Especially since both Team Aqua and Magma themselves are both stupid as fuck organizations who think fucking up the environment won't lead to disaster.
