Fangame of Dubious Quality Submission Thread
Developing a Pokémon fangame built almost entirely from submissions, replacing the original types, Pokémon, abilities, and moves.
Yeah, sorry about the delay. Work-life balance was thrown off by the new job.

As a sign of goodwill, mons submitted this thread will be added, regardless if we hit the unique line cap we voted on. If you're concerned about not being able to get a whole line in before the thread closes, submit a single mon from the evo line (existing lines will remain open for future threads).

i think there should be a gun type birdmon that gets a speed boost reskin called Bane of Zblock as its hidden ability
would be quite strong so maybe it could be locked behind a significant challenge

on an possibly very vaguely related note, it's possible to have a RPG maker XP game open up a flash .swf file for whatever purposes
a practical use could be if anyone feels like fodick could use some sidequest where you have to complete some flash game to get access to something (would probably have it run a script in the rmxp game that checks a save for the flash game

idea for the professor/rival since that's an idea floating around in the main document
remember DICKS Oak? his nephew, Richard Koch (often just called Dick), got hired as the region's professor (by merit of being the only person who volunteered to be one as the fodick region's league started to open) approximately 3 minutes before the intro cutscene starts
as for mons he uses, since he's actually trying to obey rule 5 by catching as many new mons as possible, his teams will be composed of whatever starter is stronger against yours and up to 5 mons that a player could reasonably acquire around whatever point in the game you fight him, all acting as a coherent team (accounting for starter)
in other words, a rival meant to actually be equal in strength to the player

guy who's sprited for an essentials project here
essentials uses 2x pixel size for its sprite files
this is to ensure compatibility with different frame size options that are multiples of 0.5x (0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, 3x, etc) which includes the default small 0.5x/1px, medium 1x/2px, and large 2x/4px options all essentials versions has (and some versions have an inbetween size that's 1.5x sprite scale or 3px per depicted pixel)

your sprites are half the intended size. you can fix that by resizing them 2x with nearest neighbor as the resampling setting

not gonna fucking matter when it'll 1: likely outspeed anyways even after webs, and 2: 200 attack will not give all but the bulkiest mons more than one turn at most to setup
and none of your alleged "uhm it's actually balanced because these things exist" counters are actually in the fodq dex


Also you need to realize that it's not healthy for a game to be balanced around an overpowered thing that requires people to spend their limited resources (in this case teambuilding slots for mons/moves/abilities/items/EVs) just for something that'll overpower them anyways, and render whatever counters they force useless in the event that it's not present

I think this could be a good place to find a radiation-themed legendary. Speaking of that, maybe the minor legendary trio of the region could be composed of 3 legendaries from different region's legendary trios; one from the birds, one from the cats, and one from the regis.
Fodquian Articuno would be Gun/Sport type with Bane of Zblock as its ability (speed boost + sandstorm immunity so it can spam desert eagle), the idea for a mon with that ability/theming is in >>58009676. Fittingly, it'll also be found in a recreation of a Counter Strike: Source map.

Fodquian Raikou would be Mineral/Strange type, based on various proposed long term nuclear waste warning messages. Specifically:

150 attack and 150 speed as separate stats is one thing (even if a lot of official box legendaries don't even go that far in both stats)
having attack derived from an already absurd speed stat is another because speed boosting moves boost offenses too (leading to absurdly fast snowballing), free EVs to spend on bulk since only one stat's worth of EVs need to be spent on offenses, and self attack lowering moves have their downside removed, on top of rendering burn/intimidate useless
the ability is, to put it simply, completely game breaking

also like a few threads ago the lurkers all agreed that extreme downsides shouldn't be the only way of balancing extreme positives, as downsides can be easily worked around/entirely disregarded while positives can be abused to hell and back. it's also prone to fucking with the AI if the mon in question is bizarre enough in terms of function
and in a similar vein, let's also stay away from mons that utterly ignore game mechanics. let that shit stay in vgc's restricted legendary allowed formats where it belongs

also on the topic of mapping, since events (cutscenes, static encounters, NPCs, anything interactive) are part of the map file they're on, there should be a standard for variable numbering so mappers can easily know what variables/switches do what
could be as easy as assigning each type of switch/variable their own hundred or so switches/variables
for instance, based on what I'm assuming the project's scope is

i think the actual rpg maker implementation (and not the MS paint first sketch) should be more chaotic to better suit the game's theming
the unusually long road and duplicated pokemon centers are a nice starting point, though

also for the purpose of conserving map IDs (since there is a hard cap of 999 in rpg maker xp, you can't raise it by clicking a "set max" button) we should have buildings/rooms within the same town/route share a map with the rooms being separated via enough spacing so that their furthest reachable edges won't lead to the player seeing anything that's supposed to be in another room
with the map transitions taking the player to the corresponding tile on the indoors map (building A entrance would take you to building A's entrance on the town indoors map) and transitions between floors/rooms being teleporters where appropriate instead of map connections

an exception can be made for stuff that'd warrant different tilesets (gyms, certain dungeons, etc) and obviously we'll need separate maps for areas with different non-static encounters via the same methods, but ideally we should avoid wasting the limited map ID capacity with individual houses/rooms
why is this important, anyways? the answer is workflow convenience and the saved map IDs being a boon when we need to add more content later on and to give potential modders room to work with

also the map size cap is 500x500 tiles but we should almost never need to get close to that.

early-midgame sidequest idea:
a local bartender has a rat problem at his establishment
he'll pay you to investigate the cause by going into the basement where you'll find static merchodent encounters (4 of those buggers per sprite/event, fought in double battles) flooding the room, all spawning from a faucet until it's turned off
once you fight your way to it and interact with it, the spawns stop, and after you clear out the remaining ones you get your reward

which in classic jrpg fashion would have been something very useful right before you got it, like the TM for some gun or spicy type spread move

to be honest i don't think balancing has to be a #1 priority beyond just making sure that there aren't any obviously overpowered mons or shitmons
both of those are problems because those extremes make the decision making process of a rpg irrelevant
if something is too strong, then picking it becomes a nondecision as it'll smash through whatever opposition the game throws at you, no skill or thinking required (especially if the mon in question is so good that it becomes the best option in every situation it's available in)
if something is too weak, then not picking it becomes a nondecision as no one trying to win battles will pick it
for a pokemon game to be meaningful, it must contain meaningful decisions in what mons you use

I think it should be addressed that a bunch of moves appear to have been submitted by those who can't tell the difference between move base power used for calculations and final damage dealt
Fixed damage moves tend to scale very poorly past the point in the game where the typical mon has enough HP to tank more than two of them, as opposed to moves that do percentage-based damage or use regular base power
And likewise they'll be busted at lower levels - there's a reason every official and unofficial little cup format has sonic boom and dragon rage pre-banned

I'm not sure if that stat order is in the normal HP/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe format or the HP/Atk/Def/Spe/SpA/SpD format that Essentials uses
But I'd highly suggest giving it a real special defense stat so the first special move it faces won't rip apart half its otherwise high HP at minimum
