Is there some sort of mythological thing that I'm failing to pick up on even after putting in hours of research? Can't even find a developer interview or anything similar.

I'm pretty sure the designer for Dratini and Dragonair didn't design Dragonite. That's not exactly a complete answer for why Dragonite looks the way it does, but maybe the line would feel more cohesive if all 3 were made by the same person

I like Dragonite. This art doesn't really show off its good side, it's not throwing its weight around.

There's not much you can do with Dragonair but make its doodads bigger. It's just a snake.

Am I the only who actually likes Dragonite? It's a fun spin on the dragon cliche. It has a nice colour scheme and it looks powerful but cute at the same time.

Dragonair's original design also looked more like Dragonite (which was created possibly an entire year earlier under Tajiri's direction), and Nishida is on record saying she preferred to make evolutions look surprisingly different.

And if you go look at Dragonite's original sprite from Red and Green, it looks pretty different as well, and the idea that they were always meant to be one evolutionary family doesn't seem so crazy.

Because in 1995 they didn't know there would be 30 more years of Pokemon games so they wanted to cover both eastern and western Dragon designs between Dragonair and Dragonite.

Isn't it supposed that Sugimori designed Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise first and Nishida took this as a reference to create the pre-evolutions?

No, just in this thread on a board that is infamously contrarian, do not take discourse on this board too seriously, use a grain of salt and your player experience to find an opinion. In hypothetical discussions like this for example, on the contrarian side, they just simply have different salt and experiences they wish they had because of that. I personally think that Dragonite deserves a regional form soon, pokemon with a very loyal fanbase that could honestly benefit from it seeing as Charizard has 9 gorillion variants on top of the arguably most desirable shiny variant.

Would be fun seeing what they come up with for a dragon regional, though from what I’ve seen regionals don’t really make the original more loved and if anything just makes people shit on the original even more
>seeing as Charizard has 9 gorillion variants on top of the arguably most desirable shiny variant.
I honestly think Charizard is the reason Dragonite hasn’t gotten any form yet
>we need to use a dragon for something
>lets look through the Kanto dex
>oh look there’s Dragonite

I think that's just contrarians and people who complain about competitive. People who like a pokemon because they like it have a 'two cakes' response. Even in competitive it's a toss up if the new form will even be better as plenty of mons (weezing, ninetales, dugtrio...) are as equally viable their newer variants.

Do you guys think Dragonite is scaly?. I like to imagine that she has a sort of mammalian texture besides the underbelly
