FRLG are some of the worst games in the series. The music remixes alone still make me mad to this day.

I specialize in gen 1 and play RBY almost exclusively and way more than FRLG, but it's really subjective. I like RBY because of how buggy it is. What FRLG has going for it is better graphics, (because obviously) more moves, more abilities, more pokemon, better AI, better battle mechanics, and not being a buggy mess to the point where it is almost impossible to have a normal battle without a glitch happening. The main thing I don't like about FRLG is that it plays way slower than RBY. I prefer RSE using that game engine because teaching a TM doesn't take forever among other things.

FRLG also has more in-game help for a new player than RBY did. As a kid, I needed a guide for Red Version. I don't think I would've needed one with all the in-game help that FRLG gives you. I did read Red's game manual and got lost in Mt. Moon so I asked my mom to buy me the Nintendo Power guide. I likely would've never figured the vending machine thing out without the guide.

What problems? The only thing I can think of, is the evolution problem for Pokemon like Crobat. Which is just an inconvenience rather than an actual problem. What else does bother you in FRLG?

I played RBY/GSC as a kid during the height of Pokémania but the DS Pokémon games are my favorite and I think they're objectively the best in terms of quality.

FRLG is very underrated.

HGSS and Platinum are properly rated.

Replaying Sapphire has irreversibly ruined Gen 4 for me. I bought myself an original copy of Platinum the other day to relive my childhood only for the game to frustruate me to no end with its slow as fuck engine and terrible framerate both in the overworld and during battle. So much so that it's barely playable with set mode and animations turned off. The game's nearly not as good and ergonomic as I remembered it to be. And to think that Diamond & Pearl are even worse in those aspects.

I do love Kanto a lot. Johto and Kanto (+Sevii Islands) are my favorite regions. I also like Sinnoh very much.

I used to be like you bro: I used to choose my favorite games based on the battle facilities available in each game. And my favorites battle facilities are in BW2.

HGSS > FRLG and both were good remakes. Especially HGSS with being able to battle all 16 gym leaders in a row in the post-game in the Fighting Dojo if you set it up right.
LGPE and BDSP were bad.
ORAS was great. It solved issues RS had such as the rival not having a 3rd starter evolution battle, Zinnia and the Delta Episode were cool, and so was Courtney's redesign.

I'm someone else, but I also like Kanto for how open it is. Replaying the game and doing things in different orders is fun. Battle facilities add a lot, but also I find them very repetitive when you need to get win streaks to do anything. I'm more interested in rematches as there is the level progression which changes how the battles go. Where at fixed level battles in battle facilities you usually just get your best team and stick with them and the same tactics.

FRLG added more new content than any other remake (Sevii Islands, VS Seeker, Fame Checker, Improved Pokemon League rematches for the first time, etc).

As for the music, I like how it sounds in FRLG for the most part. The Johto remixes on the Sevii Islands are especially good.

Personally, I love the battle facilities because they're more fair because of the equal level cap.

But I just noticed that recently, a good Battle facility doesn't satisfy me, unless it's set in a good region, with a good Pokemon selection.

Like I said earlier, my favorite Battle Facilities are the PWT and the Battle Subway (both in BW2), but I just don't like the Pokemon selection (I dislike Unova's Pokemon in general). And while I consider Unova itself a good region, it's not *as* great as Kanto+Sevii Islands, Johto and Sinnoh (my top 3 favourite regions).

Also yes, rematches are great too. That's one of the reasons why I like FRLG and Platinum. The VS Seeker is awesome for this.

Btw, for me, Crystal would have been 2nd or 3rd instead of HGSS, if it had the full non-butchered version of Kanto, with a functioning Safari Zone and also Seafoam Islands, Viridian Forest, Pewter Museum, Cerulean Cave, etc. HGSS is great and all, but it kinda ruined the atmosphere of GSC. Also, following Pokemon gets annoying really fast when it's obligatory like in HGSS instead of optional.
