Which region before Gen 6 had the best regional dex?

probably Kanto or Hoenn. Johto’s is good in theory but in practice it’s implemented in a tedious way. Sinnoh’s is notoriously bad and I personally dislike the new set of mons it introduced so the second attempt at it falls flat for me.

unova2.0’s is the best, almost like a best-of of the previous gens with the native unovamons. emerald and platinum also have a nice mix.
the worst easily goes to johto; unironically like 6 pokemon in that region. the rest are so shit not even the gym leaders bother to use them so they wouldn’t overshadow KANTOOOO mons like gastly.
hgss did fuck all to fix the distribution of johtomons and getting evolution items is still annoying af, locked hoennmons and most cross gen evos to the post game, and didn’t raise wild life levels at all. literally 1.5 regions of level 15 boring ass bellsprouts and rattatas all the way until red

Probably Platinum Sinnoh. DP were underbaked, Kanto was okay for the time but hasn't aged well since Hoenn, Hoenn is okay but water making up half the region geographically kinda limits what can be found out there, and Johto thought people would be find with them sending a good chunk of the Pokémon people actually want to Kanto. Unova is pretty good, but it has a rough early-game area where they intentionally make everything you get before the third gym hit a pretty low ceiling so that you swap them out later on.

Lacking Ghost. And Dragon, but at the time it was the final boss type of the only game, so it makes sense there weren't too many of that type.

Johto is a sequel to the Kanto games, but I'm of the opinion a new game should showcase its new Pokemon more. But the new Pokemon have low encounter rates or aren't in Johto at all.

Too many new Water-types, while lacking Ice and Steel. And breeding is a pain due to no Ditto until Emerald or trade with FRLG.

DP dex is awful, what were they thinking? Platinum fixed it.

Until the Cheren fight on Route 3, you see like the same 5 Pokemon every time. After that battle it opens up, but by that point you already have one badge. And I actually really liked the idea of a reboot by doing only new Pokemon, but at that point in the series 155 was no longer enough to carry a full regional dex. The sequels improved it.

Difficult to give an answer, I think Kanto or Platinum Sinnoh.

Both the raw number of pokemon and when you can catch them are factored in. RSE and Platinum offer great distribution over the course of the entire game as opposed to Kanto and Unova's limited early game selection. Johto gets docked for how hard the new pokemon were gatekept through swarms and postgame content. DP gets docked for cutting all the evos and fire types.

I feel that BW2 jumped the shark on the pre-E4 regional dex bloat, which only became even more bloated with XY onward.
