It was different. Even when I played it, at some point it did feel different to me. I don‘t know how my initial reaction was again, because it was so damn long ago. I think I really didn‘t like the postgame at all.
But when I played them right before s/m release I had the time of my life. I loved that playthrough. And if I didn‘t have bunch of other games I am playing right now I would probably do another playthrough of it.

There's a few factors.

Aging out was a big problem. I got a Gameboy and Blue as a kid, and Black was the first game since that just did nothing for me. I basically dropped the franchise (new stuff, still loved me some FRLG, Plat, Colo/XD, and HGSS) until the kino nuke that is PLA brought me back. SV is cool, SwSh was shit except for the atmosphere of battles in the big stadiums.
Also, I did recently go back and try the games I missed like XY, SM, etc. I don't regret skipping the lot.
