Some types have weather, some have terrain. What should others have?

Weather touches all. Terrain touches ground. How about something that touches the sky? Benefits Flying, Dragon, Bug, and Ghost.

Nah, I mean the mechanic would be split between four of whatever they'd call it between those four types like how weather and terrain has four each.

Flying has Delta Stream
Ghost should have Gen 4 Fog back
Poison, Ground, and Steel have Entry Hazards
Dark should get Vile Terrain, which boosts Dark type moves and raises grounded pokémon's attack by 1 stage whenever they ko an opponent
Bug should get the Swarm weather, boosting bug type moves and damaging all non-bug types by the same amount as sandstorm
Dragon should get Draconic Terrain, boosting dragon type moves and reducing fairy type damage by 25%
Fighting should get the entry hazard Hidden Fists, acting as a fighting type stealth rock
Finally, Normal should get Normal Terrain. It boosts normal type moves, and also boosts STAB moves of any type.

Maybe time of the day?

>Morning: Fighting type (wake up early to do 100 pushups)
>Day: Steel type (as hard work of the day)
>Evening: Bug type
>Night: Dark type

For the rest like hiding spot?

>Ground: ground through Dig
>Flying: sky through moves like Fly
>Ghost: in ghost world
>Poison: in the toxic gas

That would leave Dragon and Normal.

Imagine the time of the day being randomly generated and changing every 2 turns. There would be a move like Procrastination that would move the counter 2 turns forwards, and the move Slow Day that would have current time elongated.

It doesn't. There's no setup except for restricted legendary with a mechanics that won't be there anymore.

I propose the idea of conditions. They effect only the 2/4 pokemon currently on the field at the time of activation. They can either be set by moves or abilities and when any of the pokemon who were on the field when it activated switch out, the condition ends for them. Or after 5 turns. Only one condition can be active at a time, with new ones canceling out old ones.

>Fighting - Furious
The pokemon become enraged with a fighting sprit, increasing offensive stats and lowering defensive stats.

>Poison - Sickened
Pokemon who are poisoned or badly poisoned move last from fatigue, regardless of their speed stat or Trick Room.

>Ghost - Scared
All non Ghost-types have a 20% chance to be immobilized by fear when trying to attack a Ghost-type pokemon. (Maybe Dark could be immune to this)

>Dark - Sinister
The pokemon acts cruelly by dealing increased damage to pokemon suffering from a status ailment. (I'm aware Merciless does something similar but beats "Blinded" lowering accuracy)

I've got to go for now but I'll be back if I can think of anything else.

is that like status condition? or an aura that affects everyone? like everyone who isn't poison is sickened when this effect is active?

interesting how some affect pokemon of this type and others affect other/all

Remove the terrains and give every type a weather. Then make weather infinite again. We're weather warring now baybee.

Flying has immunity to some grounded attacks or effects
Poison has poison immunity and absorbs toxic spikes
Ghost has trapping immunity
Dark has Prankster status immunity
Ground has sandstorm immunity and cannot be paralyzed by twave (and that's not because of type immunity, since you can sand attack a flying type)
Steel cannot be poisoned, has sandstorm immunity and for the love of god do not buff it

They're not as flash as weather and terrain interactions, but some of the other types do have special gimmicks already

I wish fairy terrain actually did something good for it specifically, instead it nullified a type their immune to and the terrain specific move is a garbage explosion clone.

ice is really the odd man out with weather. sunlight is a distinct buff to fire and grass, rain to water, electric, and flying, and sandstorm to ground, rock, and steel. ice certainly doesn't need any of its advantages watered down, but hail certainly sticks out as it is

my main problem with terrain is that it's boring compared to weather. the idiosyncratic way random moves work differently in weather is a lot of the charm, but everything with terrain is very cut and dry

should hail/snow connect with ghost maybe? as in the snow/winter is like the death of nature, or like there's always a chilling cold around ghosts or steel type as magnetism becomes stronger in cold
would be nice

Honestly some of the only pokemon videos I don't regret watching are the ones that are like "what if every type had a weather/terrain/status condition".

It does get funny when you can tell they're stretching. Understandable when there's 18 types, but still, you can tell the exact moment where they're like.... "idk, maybe the water status is called damp and makes you slower?"
